Probably one of the most distinctive album covers... and one of several by the Rolling Stones of art worthiness. Cut at several studios... including the 8 track at Elecktra, Sunset and Olympic. Robert Brownjohn had exactly £1000 to come up with a cover design for this LP, for the Stones to tour in '69-'70.
Jagger had originally contacted artist MC Escher... but rumour has it - he didn't care for Mick's attitude and made his excuses... though I seem to recall Escher liked Ian Hunters manner a whole heap better... and obliged them with this:
So Keith contacted Brownjohn who had been responsible for the graphics of film projected on a naked torso at the opening credits to From Russia With Love.
Working titles then were, Hard Knox and Durty Sox and at the time of cover conception it was named Automatic Changer, hence the grooves on the record below the cake bare witness to a different song order.
A very young Delia Smith baked the cake... and years later became a TV chef and writer.
Victor Khan set up the shots and had been responsible for cutting the corners off Through The Past Darkly months before.
Let It Bleed is now hailed as the second in a run of four classic Stones offerings.
