Well, cutting my musical teeth in the 70s, by the 80s, my lifetime favorites were pretty much set.

During the 80s, I was in my 20s and doing a lot of clubbing and listened to a lot of that techno stuff, but nothing that really stuck enough that I'd want to call favorites today.

There are a small handful of 80s bands that did catch my ear and are still with me today. John Mellencamp, Def Leppard, Madonna.

And, even though they began in the 70s, two of my top ten all time are The Police and the Cars.

I did, however, pick up of 2 of my lifetime top 5 artists who's first albums appeared in the 80s. Iron Maiden and Stevie Rey Vaughan.

The 80s was a boom time for the evolution of music. At the end of the 70s, punk flared up out of nowhere and burnt out just as quickly. I wasn't surprised. Punk was such an intense form of expression, there was no way it was going to last for long.

Techno wasn't entirely a punk growth, though. The Cars had been sort of a cool punk/techno band since 78, and to me, they're the grandfathers of the whole 80s techno movement. Countless bands were born & the level of experimentation with sound and effects is immeasurable.

On the other end of that, you had hair metal. Other than a handful of gunslingers on guitar and a couple decent vocalists, all hair metal had to contribute was a look. (Thanks MTV)
