Both bands were eclectic and could it off with panache. However, VH were so coool too. Huge love to May, Mercury et al. BUT VH in their prime (‘78 - ‘85) were untouchable. Jamie’s Cryin’ isn’t in my top five VH songs but it has lots of the ingredients that made VH such a classic band: Dave’s...
'5150' was my first VH album, the one that got me into the band. I think I must've overplayed it in my teens, though, as it's been a couple of years since I listened to it. It's not in my top 5 VH albums (I just don't like 'Love Walks In' and Al's electric drums are very outdated now) but for...
Re: Fair Warning
Yep, it's always bugged me. Ted just turned the bass'n drums down to allow Ed's guitar to come to the fore. That's not a problem but I just loved the intro and the adjustment is a bit too noticeable for my liking.
Fair Warning - an out-and-out classic. 10/10.
As much as I'd have loved to see EVH at #1, I can't really complain about the ones above him. It's also good to see Richie Blackmore recognised as he's too often overlooked in these types of poll. (You know the kind, where Kurt Cobain polls in the Top Ten!)
Peace!
Mike Rutherford for me. A conceited, arrogant so-and-so.
Bono also hits a nerve, though strictly speaking I don't think he could be called a jerk - he's just up his own fundament.
OU812 for me in spite of the production. Imagine how much better it'd be if you could hear the bass?!
EEAS is my least favourite of DLR's original trilogy (EEAS, Skyscraper and A Little Ain't Enough). I just don't care for the songs too much; a triumph of style over substance. That aside...
Cheers Slip, s'good to be here. Thanks too for the clip of AVH.
Coincidentally, I was flicking through the channels earlier tonight and landed on Al's solo in the RHRN concert from '93. Unbelievably, Van Halen were being shown on TV here in the UK - the above live show is being shown on Sky...
I agree. After all, how often can we recognise a song, or a bit of a song, simply by the drums. AVH is an excellent drummer IMO who deliberately restricted his playing for the sake of the songs.
