Sweden allows for a lot of personal freedom and recreation in their prisons, and they have one of the lowest repeat offender rates in the world, if not the lowest. I think it could be a decent start in prison reform.

I remember when I was just starting out. I took lessons for a year and a half, but my teacher and I stopped seeing eye to eye, so I stopped. I'd say go for the lessons until you're physically good enough to teach yourself. It can be hard to stay motivated if you've got blisters on your fingers...
