Denny Doherty: Mamas & Papas: R.I.P.

Denny and Cass Elliott were formerly together in a folk group called the Mugwumps, which weren;t bad at all. I saw them with Peter, Paul and Mary when I was a little boy wiht my parents. That group also had John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky. Elliott and Denny went on to the Mama's and the Papas...

    Leon Russell (Official Thread)

Re: leon russell fans? Shelter People was a great album to be sure. It contained, among other things, an incredible version of George Harrison's Beware of Darkness. Does anyone remember when he chimed in on that song with george at the Concert for Bangledesh? It was a great moment. I still...

    Guitarists?

Jorma Kaukonen is a great addition. Some of the work he did with Jeff Airpane and Hot Tuna was simnply amazing

I have the first four Bloodrock albums and I don't think Nitzinger was ever actually a member of the band, just the songwriter and perhaps producer.

    Leon Russell (Official Thread)

Re: leon russell fans? I think he went in to the "Hank Wilson" era right after that. I actually liked that album a lot thought it was a huge departure. reminds me a little of what Springsteen just did with the Pete Seeger stuff.

    Guitarists?

I do not see how anyone can really rate some of the great guitar players over one another. So many styles, so much subjectivity. Some of the best guitar players I have ever hear came from more obscure bands like Jan Van Akkerman of Focus. It is hard for me to believe there were very many more...

    Leon Russell (Official Thread)

Re: leon russell fans? That was an odd story as I recall. Leon and Benno (a pretty solid guitar player) formed a duo called the Asylum Choir and put out one album called Look Inside the Asylum Choir, I believe in 1968 or 1969. It was a pretty mediocre effort in my opinion. Some people really...

    Leon Russell (Official Thread)

Re: leon russell fans? Man, John Nitzinger, a blast form the past. He wrote a shit load of great songs for Bloodrock, a very tight, underappreciated band. He also wrote from stuff for Alice Cooper and Carl Palmer's PM.

    Spooky Tooth (Official Thread)

Re: Spooky Tooth Spooky Two and The LAst Puff were great albums. The rest was pretty so-so in my opinion.

    Favorite Stones Album?

I have to amend my previous post to include "Between the Buttons" which I listen to today. Any album with Miss Amanda Jones has to be a classic.

    Leon Russell (Official Thread)

Re: leon russell fans? I went through a serious Leon Russell phase and then sort of lost interest. The list of his collaborations reads like the who's who of rock and roll and I respect the hell out of him. I thought he hit his peak with "Carney" and "Leon Live". Never much cared for anything...
