Otis Redding was my introduction to what I would term 'Proper Music' in the mid to late '60s as I was moving into my teen years. At that time 'Rock' was still evolving from it's various roots and many of the big players have quoted Otis as a huge influence. Front men such as Paul Rodgers started out trying to sound like him. He truly was a huge loss to the world.

I prefer soul and r&b from the 60s to the later variety. Motown, Stax and Atlantic particularly. Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Brook Benton, Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson were truly soulful rather than just pop singers. Aretha was at her peak, as was Diana Ross and Etta James. I love that 60s soul sound, I always felt that in later decades a lot of the excitement was lost for some reason, even though recording technology advanced greatly.
