When Aerosmith hit the music scene, they didn’t have anything new to offer musically, but they did have a couple things going for them; for one, it was the 70’s, and Aerosmith didn’t try to out-perform any band, they just kept chuggin’ out no nonsense loud blues-rock that fans loved. Secondly, Aerosmith had some excellent musicians that had an unmistakable chemistry between them. The guitar team of Perry and Whitford, the confidence and vocal abilities of Tyler, hard hitting drums of Kramer, and lastly the often unheard bass lines of Hamilton. They were truly an American Rock n’ Roll band .

At the time of the Debut release, Aerosmith was being dubbed as “Stones” clones, because this album takes the blues tones of the Yardbirds and Stones, as did many bands during the early 70’s, and didn’t add anything new except for loudness. This image would later change with subsequent album releases. The one big thing Aerosmith had going for them in the Debut, is consistency. The whole album is consistent in its sound and production. It was boogie from start to finish, with one single outstanding original track, “Dream On”. IMO, I don’t think the band ever reproduced the impact that Dream On had on critics and fans. Their greatest ballad ever!

Another song from the debut that stands out as something different is “One Way Street”. It is a long song at 7 minutes, but was created to highlight Tyler on the Harp. Mama Kin definitely shows its Stones blues influence with a touch of Aerosmith sleeze added. To end the album, is an excellent cover of a Rufus Thomas song, “Walking the Dog”, which was misspelled on the first pressing of the album as “Walking the Dig” . Overall, I think the Boys from Boston did a pretty good job on their first album, you can’t help but like it.

My rating for overall listening pleasure 4.5/5

One of their best and it has my favorite Aerosmith song of all time..."Dream On".

They are on their way to giving the Stones a run for their money as far as how long they keep touring.(When Tyler finishes his latest Detoxification gig.)

Their longevity is pretty amazing when you consider how tough they had it in the beginning. Once critics label you a clone, usually that means doom for the career, but the Boston Bad Boys took the punch and kept chuggin' along. I think Tyler will be fine, he has to be burned out. The life of a star all those years, coupled with addictions has to be taking its toll on his life. He is in one of the best rehab facilities, so he should do just fine.

The problem is life on the road,,,so much idle time they all get bored to death. Then slowly they start to do stuff that they Know is wrong but can't help themselves.

I thought Tyler had control of his vices, ever since that moment years and years ago when he was standing in the street and Forgot where he lived. Scared the shit out of himself. I hope he does clean up, he should call Alice for advice, he's been doing great for decades now.

Magic.. To me a debut can sometimes be the one album that makes a band.. I have this album and sadly.. I feel it was just a preview of what was to come..
"Get Your Wings" Was more to my liking.. But their debut was no slacker..
Toys in the attic and "Rocks".. Hell ya.. But over all.. I'm sitting here seeing a band I had the chance to see in concert a number of times.. They are going through the changes.. I ignore the bad press of Tyler and his drug problems..
Whatever happens to the band will be in my utmost respect of good memories and that's where they will stay..
Big band.. Best times.. :grinthumb

Re: Aerosmith ~ Aerosmith Debut (1973)

Aerosmith's Aerosmith was a pretty decent debut album with the radio hits "Dream On" and "One Way Street" and album cuts "Make It", "Movin' Out" and "Walkin' The Dog" but it was also very raw sounding, which I suppose you would expect from a band the first-time out of the gate.

And while it was never one of their best albums, it did provide a hint as to the potential of their songwriting and the chemistry of their musicianship that would thankfully soon follow.

Great album & great review as always Magic! I really loved this band in the 70's & their debut album is great. I really love every song on there.Of course Mama Kin was at the top of my list but it was songs Somebody, Write Me,One Way Street, & Movin' Out that really stood out because of their style.Walking the Dog is a cool song & I can't believe all the versions I have of that song. Besides Aerosmith I have versions by Rufus Thomas, The Rolling Stones,John Cale,Ratt, Mitch Ryder, & Rick Derringer!

One weird question for everyone, I've been a fan of Aerosmith since the late 70's so I don't notice but when I have the ipod on shuffle for me & the wife, whenever a song from the first 2 Aerosmith albums comes on she has no idea what artist is on & then she's always surprised when I say it's Aerosmith. She says Tyler sounds so different as does the music. She's 6 years younger & grew up on the Permanent Vacation/Pump stuff but I don't see that much difference in his voice how about anyone else?

Good question Bucky...I can't answer that one seeing I only have early Aerosmith albums.

Magic will be here later and she is an Expert par Excellence on the band so I'm sure she'll have an opinion on Tyler's vocals.

Someone mentioned the same thing in the Elton John thread, that since the late 80's his voice is deeper, and lost some of it's character, again on that one I only have early EJ CD's so I can't really tell.

I can understand that RT! Tylers vocals are kind of deeper IMO on the earlier stuff and got raspier throughout his career. I actually bought this and other Aerosmith releases after starting with Pump and I heard a difference.

Aerosmith was my first obsession and my peak band during my cassette days. Dream On alone makes this album a classic. Great review Magic! :grinthumb
