Darkthrone is a Norwegian black metal band. They formed in 1987 as a death metal band, but after embracing the black metal style in 1991, they became a driving force in the Norwegian black metal scene. For most of this period Darkthrone has consisted of just two musicians, Nocturno Culto and Fenriz, who have sought to remain outside the music mainstream. Since 2006 their work has incorporated more elements of traditional heavy metal, speed metal and punk rock.

Re: Darkthrone (and other Fenriz related bands)

Yep :) I have A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Transilvanian Hunger and Soulside Journey by Darkthrone, and Vinterskugge by Isengard. I've also heard one or two tracks by Dødheimsgard, didn't think much of them at the time but might give them another try at some point.

They're an incredible band for sure. While I wouldn't consider them the #1 best 2nd wave black metal band (Burzum would of course get my vote), Darkthrone took a discipline and consistency to their approach that none of the other bands had, possibly stemming from their early death metal history. While Mayhem bubbled over with turmoil, Darkthrone soldiered on, while Varg went to jail, Darkthrone soldiered on, giving them one of the best, strongest, and I'd say 2nd greatest collection in the genre. They're one of those iconic bands where if you like metal you have to at least appreciate Darkthrone, if not downright adore them.

Here's one of my favorites from Panzerfaust, just a gorgeous slow burner.

I am fairly new to these.I wrote them off yrs ago after hearing brief snippets.I revisited them and their early stuff is grim and frostbitten .The drums are in the background and really drive forward. The vocals are ungodly and the production is bleak and thin.SUPERB stuff.

So, their newest record is a freaking masterpiece. They played Crust Punk for their last few releases, only to drop this bombshell of Trad/Speed Metal that sounds straight out of '82-'83

I thought their new album was mediocre at best. And their punkier stuff was ****ing horrible to listen to. I will only listen to their black or death metal material.

Well, it takes all types, I guess. Conversely, this is their only album I listen to with any regularity of late.

Musically their newer stuff is ok but Fenriz clean vocals are ****ing terrible. Their true masterpieces are albums like A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Total Death, Plaguewielder.

"A Blaze in the Northern Sky", "Under a Funeral Moon" and "Transylvanian Hunger" are the three essentials imo. The rest up to and including "The Cult Is Alive" is excellent and among the better black metal of the 90/00s (with "Sardonic Wrath" and "Ravishing Grimness" being the weakest of the bunch). I liked the change they did with "F.O.A.D.", which turned out to be a fun little record. The next two didn't do much for me, but I got really into "The Underground Resistance".
