Let's talk about one of the best hard rock/metal bands to ever come out of England, Deep Purple. Formed in 1968 there were the usual line-up changes and struggles to achieve success before the release of their 3rd studio album, simply called "Deep Purple". Although the band has more lives than Rasputin seemingly I am concentrating on the line-up I know best, and the albums in my library are almost all from the 70's.

I was surprised to learn a couple of years ago that they had a massively successful world tour, the latest incarnation of the band, I'll let someone more familiar than myself talk about the current band.

I started with Machine Head, and it remains the album I play the most of their entire discography, even though Smoke on the Water has been played to death, I still enjoy it and Never skip over it when I invite Purple over for a beer and a concert...:grinthumb

Re: Deep Purple

I am a huge fan of The Purp. Of the three bands considered to be the grand daddies of metal (the other two being of course Sabbath and Zep ((though I have never once considered Zep to be metal)).) I think Deep Purple are the best over all musicians and I like them best by far. Granted there are albums by them that I don't personally care all that much for ("Come Taste The Band" comes to mind first), but of their albums that I like I like them a LOT. My favorite Deep Purple album is...

What's more amazing about what a great live band they were is that they didn't do ANY rerecording on this live album. Quite a rare thing really for as good as they sound.

Zep and Sabbath are so much bigger now than Deep Purple is....and that's a shame. Really the only Deep Purple song that I've notice almost ANYONE who isn't a fan of them knows is "Smoke On The Water" which is a great song but Deep Purple has sold over a 100 million albums and "Smoke On The Water" does not move that number of units on it's own.

Re: Deep Purple

Yeah it always mystified me that they didn't get the respect I thought they deserved. Oh well there are a few of us out there with Impeccable taste anyway.

I suppose the same could be said about Cheap Trick, Thin Lizzy, and so many others.....

But yes atleast some of us still love Deep Purple.

Re: Deep Purple

I even like their "Concerto For Orchestra",,,before Ritchie took control of the band and steered them down the harder rock path.:D

I like "Concerto For Orchestra" too. That was almost entirely Jon Lord behind the wheel and I think he did a great job. Really I think his organ playing was the heart of Deep Purple, not Ritchie's guitar work.

Re: Deep Purple

one of my favorite bands. they put out a bunch of top notch albums even in this latest decade. Machine Head and Made in Japan are great but my favorite studio album is probably Burn
