Very cool group. Roy was a national treasure. His understated power is phenomenal.

I loved the Traveling Wilburys, they brought Bob Dylan back to his best and gave Roy Orbison a contemporary platform. They also dragged Tom Petty out of his pop music nightmare and, best of all, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne were up-and-running again. With real songs, guitars and an unpretentious approach, they were just what the late eighties needed, so it's a shame they did not continue through the nineties (Brian Wilson was suggested as a replacement for Roy as Jeff Lynne was producing him around that time). There was a re-released collection of their albums with bonus tracks, that had a moving documentary on DVD, on how they were a true band with their favourite singer, Roy, on lead vocals, up to the point where they returned to the material, years later, and Dani Harrison added some guitar in place of his dad - it's probably on YouTube somewhere.

Wow. Imagine them with Brian Wilson. That may have been pretty interesting.

Jeff Lynne was the guy who made that whole thing tick. The others all had huge respect for him as a producer. The Beatles had picked up on what he was doing with ELO - they recognised their own influence on what he was doing. He was, of course, a huge Beatles fan, and also a Huge Roy Orbison fan. So when the four 'Big Hitters' had been assembled Jeff brought in Roy. This whole episode was like a dream come true for Jeff Lynne - playing with and producing some of his all-time heroes.

So this video came across my recommendations from YouTube, and as I watched it it dawned on me that 3 of the members in the video have passed on, Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Tom Petty. What an amazing collection of talent that was, those 3 plus Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne. For some reason I always associate the song with the 90's even though it was released in 1988.

For your listening pleasure:

Great great song.

I didn't really appreciate the song when it first came out (I was a metalhead) but now that I'm older,I appreciate it more.

It has aged well.

That 70s Guy,

I agree. Actually, the whole album is still fun to listen to. Handle With Care, End of the Line, Not Alone Anymore (Roy Orbison on lead vocals), Tweeter and the Monkey Man (with its Springsteen related song lyrics), Heading For The Light, Rattled, and the rest are all enjoyable songs. It's obvious that The Wilburys were having fun making the record,
