Hmm.....I know "Mama" and I can see the connection. Though I think it's more based on carnival music than gypsy music. The connection is (I hope) purely coincidence though. "The Black Parade" and "Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike" were release around the same time (that album being Gogol's first exposure to the public), but "Start Wearing Purple" was written back in the 90's and actually first appeared on their debut album, but was reworked for that album. If we're going to talk about similarites though I've always thought "Mama" sounded an awful lot like Pink Floyd's "The Trial" off "The Wall".

I'm glad I'm not crazy then! I know that MCR took a lot of influences respectfully for that album. I mean they definitely blended their style with Queen in there as well as the Floyd similarity you mentioned. Also, the love for Smashing Pumpkins is there as well. They don't deny this and embrace it!

Anyway, homages are always acceptable to me when I believe a band respects their influences. I think the relation to Gogol on that one song is more coincidence or and stems that both bands are mixing newer styles with old, trying to make something as unique as they are capable of. To make this about Gogol, I think it's that crazy style that links them with the other two groups we both are fans of, The Darkness and Scissor Sisters! Just over the top crazy music that is a catharsis in the way that you can sing along just as crazily and have fun with it!

I love it when bands respect their influences and knows where music has come from. That why I love The Darkness and it's two following bands so much and why I think far more than a fair amount of modern music is so dreadful. Far too many musicians have forgotten where music has come from.

You know, a lot of people online criticize me from many of my favorite acts being "too over the top", but I don't believe that any act is too over the top. They are just more awesome than others.

Yay! It's been three years since Gogol Bordello released "Super Taranta!" and have been touring nonstop (as they have done their own career) and the time has finally come for the world's most famous gypsies to release a new album, "Trans-Continental Hustle". The new album is slated for release in mid to late April (probably the 27th) so next month is turning out to be a HUGE month in music for me (Albums from Slash, Meat Loaf, and now Gogol Bordello).

The album cover will be reveled later this month on Gogol Bordello's myspace and the track listing is as follows:

The lead track "Pala Tute" is a track that frontman, Eugene Hütz worked with Madonna on a little bit, though it's not evident (fun fact: Madonna and Eugene are actually good friends) and it is up for free download on Gogol's Myspace. If I may say so myself, I really enjoy it.

Well here it is, the cover art to "Trans-Continental Hustle". It's a bit of a departure from their other albums, especially with the bright yellow and lime green backgrounds of "Gypsy Punks" and "Super Taranta!" but I still think it looks good.

Oh my, they seem really great! Must be really fun to see them live!
I got directed here from the Beirut thread, because they're a bit similar in the sense that they're both gypsy- influenced. But this band has the cool attittude Beirut is missing, and is more upbeat, more exciting .. Actually, different in loads of ways, this is great, thanks!

Glad you liked them Julez. Gogol Bordello has a strong reputation for the energy and high theatrics to their live shows. They're currently topping my list of bands that I wanna see live.

That's some lineup Sunny. Glad you liked them. Gogol plays quite a few festivals. I'd wager they probably plan around 300 festival shows a year (maybe).

From what I understand the album is laced with Latin flare since frontman Eugene Hütz has been living in Brazil (when not touring) since 2008.
