Little Feat

Formed in Los Angeles in 1969 came a band that never got the recognition I feel they deserved. They made some great albums, and to try and label them is kind of hard to do, they are all over the place musically speaking. Lowell George was the chief songwriter of the early years, until his drug abuse finally led to a schism within the band and soon after he died of a heart attack in 1979. I only know the early version of the band up to "Waiting for Columbus", which ironically was the first record I heard by them. My brother bought it and I really enjoyed their eclectic sound so I picked up all of their early records except for "The Last Record Album". The musicianship is excellent, you have to play them a few times to really appreciate the ability of this band.

They reformed a few years after George's death and enjoyed a lot of success touring and established a solid fan base with the blues-rock crowd, but for me when George died he took the "Unique" flavor of the band with him. I am open to suggestions for any of the later CD's if we have any fans here. The only Youtube vids are compilations, I'll look for a couple of songs to post tomorrow, even if I have to upload them myself.

The debut album, it has to rank among the best undiscovered gems of the early 70's.

I have to apologize to my buddy EB, this was my 3rd "Southern Rock" band we have been chatting about and they were based in Los Angeles, but they have a definite...southern flavor to me so I have always lumped them with Skynyrd, ARS, the Allmans, etc. I have one other band I could write a thread for, but I'm leaving them for Magic seeing she is a bigger fan than I am of their music.

Re: Little Feat

I only have Greatest Hits from them, and LG, really one more?:lmao::bonk::bonk:...... your killing me with the suspense here:D

but back to Little Feat, not my favorite, but probably one of the best southern bands, musicianship wise...
really excellent players, sound, and groove to them, and not something you hear every day, too good to be mainstream, and too much groove to have cult status, this band really deserves more than they get

Re: Little Feat

It took me a while to get into LF, but I really respect them and enjoy their music now, even though I stopped at Waiting for Columbus.

Re: Little Feat

As for their later albums, "Representing The Mambo" is EXCELLENT. I only have that and "Waiting For Columbus". I bought Mambo after hearing the song Texas Twister on the radio. That album touches on several different genres - rock, blues, jazz, zydeco...
Little Feat really are good musicians. I think of them as the southern rock cousin to Steely Dan - slick musicianship, great tunes, great production, variety of styles.

Re: Little Feat

^^I hear you S&L, as I mentioned I stumbled across them late, but when I played Dixie Chicken the first time it floored me, I wondered how in the hell did they slip past me?...lol.

RF, thanks for the recommendation, I'll see if I can get hold of that album. And thanks for the description, now I don't feel like I'm the Only one who feels a southern flavor to their music.

Re: Little Feat

No one likes this great band but me seemingly...:(

I shall persevere at least up to the end of the Lowell George era of the band.:D

After a tremendous debut album came "Sailin' Shoes", which was an attempt to broaden their audience seeing that their first album didn't generate the sales that their label expected. So the second record was more accessible, less blues influence for sure, but still the eclectic sound of the band was intact.

Cold, Cold, Cold.

I sure hope some of you give them a chance, you are missing out on one of the truly great undiscovered bands of the 70's if you don't.

Re: Little Feat

Thanks for stopping by MP, it was getting lonely in here...:heheh:

Seriously LF is not a singles band, and I find that you have to play their albums a few times and then they start to grow on you...at least that is my personal perception.
