Blind Guardian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Feel free to just read their wiki page because from here on this thread will only become more and more subjective and spiced with anecdotes I gathered along the years.. (to sum up their wiki: power metal, themes like lord of the rings, concept albums, great influence in power metal, Demons and Wizards (which is Blind guardian + Iced earth))

Example of subjectivity: Blind Guardian is easely one of the best, if not the best, power metal band out there.

Example of anecdote: the above image is a poster I had hanging next to my bed for ages... Until I finally grew up and passed along the flag to a younger nephew. :grinthumb

Their albums:
# Battalions of Fear (1988)
# Follow the Blind (1989)
# Tales from the Twilight World (1990)
# Somewhere Far Beyond (1992)
# Imaginations from the Other Side (1995)
# Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998)
# A Night at the Opera (2002)
# A Twist in the Myth (2006)
# At the Edge of Time (2010)
# Beyond the Red Mirror (2015)
#Twilight

Where would I advise you to start? With their live album! Iron maiden, Iced earth and Blind guardian's live albums are amongst THE BEST live albums ever.
For example, listen to this song, it's called the bard song.

I've sang my share of bard songs at their live shows... :D and I have to say... one feels mighty singing in a crowd of 500 people. It's a feeling that cannot be compared to anything else. It's better then sex.
(ok, I'll take that back, it is equal to sex )

What you might have missed is the power metal element in that song, so here's one to make up for your loss:

Mirror Mirror Live

If you get tired of the live album, start at their first album... end with their last.

At one concert the audience was going crazy... It was a private concert, the only place where one could buy tickets was at a big metal festival a month before the private concert. And it wasn't advertised over there, only on the BG website... It was their plan to just contact the die hard fans of metal and blind guardian.. and it worked. A room filled with 300 souls breathing and drinking blind guardian as a way of survival.
The result: great show and the loss of my voice for almost a week.
(They played the bard song 2ce because the audience wouldn't stop singing it after the first time...)

And to end this post: an overkill off youtube vids... All these songs are great... I suggest you at least listen to Lord of the rings... But it isn't a typical BG song, so if you want to get a better feel of the band, pick one of the others...

Re: Blind Guardian!

I dont have any Blind Guardian in my library YET. :) After careful reading on them, I think I will start with their last 3 albums, since these are critiqued to be more progressive metal.

I will let you know what I think of them :D

Re: Blind Guardian!

Mmm.....blind guardian. I don't have much to add to what Oblivion said. Except for, after you've listened to them for a bit, go and watch their live DVD 'Imaginations through the Looking Glass'. It's amazing, honestly, its amazing. It's given me more chills down my spine then probably any other band before.

Watching this video makes me almost want to pack up my bags, find all the money I can and fly to Europe just so I can see them NOW. I mean, imagine what it would be like with the crowd chanting around you...ohh I wish

Valhalla

This is my favorite song by Blind Guardian. The only thing that bothers me about Blind Guardian is the fact that in this DVD Hansi doesn't move...almost ever. It pissed me off to no end when I first found them. But over time I've learned that he doesn't have to move...he rocks that much, he has such a control that he doesn't move. But in this song, near the end of this song, he jumps...and that is by far the coolest jumping I've ever seen anyone do. :lmao: It's just an epic song

Lord and I are tight here.

Neverlife is not lying btw..even if one is not familiar with Blind Guardian, that DVD (Imaginations Through The Looking Glass) is a must see, must own movie even if you never heard one song.

Re: Blind Guardian!

I like all of BG's albums,,,but my favorite is "Nightfall in Middle Earth". Not really a surprise to those people that know me seeing J.R.R. Tolkien is my hero, and his novels I consider masterpieces of literature. The fact that it's a concept album helps too.:D

For those of you that don't know the book, this CD is based on the novel "The Silmarillion". A story of pride and arrogance and utter cataclysm befalling the High Elves of the west as they try to regain the treasure stolen by the most evil being in their world, Morgoth. I won't go any further, on the CD there is a narrative between tracks, I like it, but some fans find it distracting.

Re: Blind Guardian!

Yeah it's not a happy fairy tale that is for sure, kind of reminds me of the Iliad in that respect. But the album is "Glorious!".

I know for a fact Magic has it now...lol.
