Fairytale of New York is a great record, but I find it almost impossible to listen to, because of the terrible way in which Kirsty MacColl died.

It was awful what happened to Kirsty, when I went to see them once they were collecting to help bring the person to justice, don't think this has happened

"The committee which has led the fight to achieve justice for Kirsty MacColl has agreed to cease campaigning. It will disband and stop collecting money to fund its activities. The remaining funds will be distributed to charities of which Kirsty would have approved.
The committee recently received news that the Mexican authorities have closed their case file on Kirsty’s death, and regard this as the end of the matter. They said they had exhausted all avenues of investigation and taken statements and affidavits from many witnesses. None of these had led to further information as to who may have been implicated, apart from the boat hand Cen Yam, who had already been convicted of causing the accident.
Once the case was closed there was virtually nothing left for the committee to campaign for. We are not able to bring any more pressure on the Mexicans than we have achieved already.
After Kirsty’s tragic death in Cozumel, Mexico in December 2000, her mother, Jean MacColl, launched the Justice for Kirsty campaign. Its primary purpose was to establish whether the Mexican judicial system had investigated the case sufficiently thoroughly for Kirsty’s family, friends and fans to accept that justice had been done in accounting for her untimely death. It did so by rallying the outrage and anger at the accident, and raised funds to allow Jean and the committee to pay for lawyers, and to approach governments at the highest level.
The committee was successful in achieving most of its aims. The clumsy cover-up that followed the accident was exposed, and pressure from the campaign and the British government compelled the Mexican authorities to re-open their enquiries. In the unstable circumstances in Mexico in recent years, it is unlikely that any more could be achieved: the case has been re-examined very thoroughly.
Jean intends to continue working in a personal capacity to raise public awareness of the key issues in the campaign: committee members have pledged their informal support for her efforts. She wishes to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to helping her and the campaign. The support of The Pogues and Billy Bragg have been especially important in increasing the public profile of the campaign.
The two charities receiving the remaining campaign funds are:
• Casa Alianza Mexico, which provides care and rehabilitation for homeless children and others at risk in Mexico
• Cuba Music Solidarity, which Kirsty had supported enthusiastically."

For the Top of the Pops appearance (17th December 1987), the BBC insisted that MacColl's singing of "arse" be replaced with the less offensive "ass", although as she mimed the word, MacColl slapped the relevant part of her body to make it clear what was meant.

On 18th December 2007, BBC Radio 1 put a ban on the words "faggot" and "slut" from "Fairytale of New York" to "avoid offence". The words, sung as Kirsty MacColl and MacGowan trade insults, were dubbed out. MacColl's mother, Jean, called the ban "too ridiculous", while the Pogues said they found it "amusing". The BBC said: "We are playing an edited version because some members of the audience might find it offensive". Later that evening Radio 1 backed down and said that after a day of criticism from listeners, the band, and MacColl's mother, they reversed the decision. The unedited version was then played later on that day. Other BBC radio stations, including the typically conservative Radio 2, had continued to play the original version throughout this period, the ban having applied to Radio 1 only. The MTV channels in the UK also subject the song to censorship by removing and scrambling the words "slut", "faggot" and "arse".
In his Christmas podcast, musical comedian Mitch Benn commented that "faggot" was Irish and Liverpudlian slang for a lazy person, and was unrelated to the derogatory term for homosexuals.

That would interest me, though it largely depends on whether it's a Shane MacGowan is sober gig... or a Shane MacGowan is totally rat-asses/hammered gig....with me being far more inclined to buy it if it's the latter of the two!!

I have read some reviews that say he is on the best form he has been for sometime, I have seen them twice and he was good but not perfect, this would interes me if he is on form, I have another live DVD from years ago which is good

Never seen the Pogues live, but I'm good with Pogues CD's providing they don't put a big picture of Shane on the front cover, then I have to hide it from the kids to stop them having nightmares. Though I did hear that he's had a new set of teeth fitted, which must be a rare example of a dentist for once actually earning the ridiculous amounts of money they make. Well over and above the call of duty I'd say having to work on that guy's mouth.
