Soot and Stars
I AM SOOT!
Ed Sheeran
With the description of this artist being a mix between a Hip-Hop group and Damien Rice how could I not want to hear this artist! With "Lego House" doing well as a single I'd heard of this artist. I listened to the album + for the first time tonight. It reminds me of early Jason Mraz with the subtle fusion of Hip-Hop jamminess that doesn't lose it's folk purity Hip Hop haters won't have their ears offended or anything. The licks remind me of Howie Day. The Damien Rice influence definitely comes in but it's a very eclectic mix overall as an album. There's an electronic feel to this but the artist is just one man with an acoustic guitar. The + title of the album is just that! The artist really builds you to an album that tightens it's grip as it goes. When I first started I felt like I had heard this before. The album changes up on you and even the second go around you here more elements in the mix. Here's the + album and highlighted tracks:
+
You Need Me, I Don't Need You
(The most Mraz-ish vibe here, funky energetic white boy soul)
Wake Me Up & Kiss Me
(Two tracks recommended for Van Morrison fans, I can hear int in some of the structures but the vocal in Wake Me Up sounds like James Blunt to me )
Give Me Love
(My absolute favorrite track, this is taken directly from Damien Rices playbook but actually unexpected within the context of the album, also adds a Gospel vibe to the Damien stylings, a more than pleasant surprise)
