Killer thread Sooty!

You can really tell Glen puts his heart and soul into all of his music. It's something I can really appreciate about this music.

Song for Someone

Those are some great covers too Sooty! Just shows that that stuff really isn't all that bad, and contains some good stuff I think a lot of people would appreciate if done in a different way.
That won't stop the hate though! :grinthumb

That's why Folk is so awesome in general. Musically it's simple and has to be carried by the artist himself. Nothing else is there to mask the authenticity. It's one man or woman often with one instrument. They are telling a story to the audience and the song depends on how well they tell it. If they write a song concerning something they truly feel it's to their benefit. All the elements for the best music are their.

And as far as pop songwriting I'm glad we can agree. That's one thing I have no problem with is other writers for people in music. I respect songwriters and if it takes a pretty voice to get it out their that the writer doesn't have then that's fine because the writers material gets to see the light of day. I could write the best song ever but my singing voice is absolutely dreadful. Only my friends are subject to that torture! :heheh: But if I wrote a gorgeous song then I'd be happy to share it with a great voice and get a songwriting credit. **** fame! If the work makes it and makes others happy that is all that matters! :grinthumb

One half of the Swell Season, Marketa Irglova, has a solo c.d. coming out! :grinthumb I have it on pre-order! I'm really looking forward to this as she's such a haunting presence and from what I'm hearing she holds her own by herself!

I love this song off of the album! Wow, I feel the equivalent of a leaf blowing effortlessly through the wind! Just such an airy, majestic, beautiful song!

Crossroads

The next one screams Aimee Mann! Great change in mood from the prior song and nice lazed melodic tune! I like the horn sections!

Officially have this album and I have to say VERY nice! You never got the FULL impression of what Marketa could do as a vocalist when she was harmonizing and collaborating with Glen Hansard but right from the gate she came out and blew Lisa Hannigans album away with hers. I'm saying that as a hyuuuuugggeee Lisa fanboy. One just needs to listen to this one song, the album opener, and hear her out Sarah McLachlan Sarah Mclachlan. Seriously, the high harmony notes gave me chills and I was actually starting to rest when I first played it. Chills! From there it doesn't go down from there! There's a celtic feel to this album with a little Tori and Sarah mixed in but there's astyle that clearly defines Marketa as well. Since Youtube is scarce for vids if you revisit her solo stuff from Once above on the page you'll hear how she has this dark, haunting vocal that sounds quite like like nothing else. Hope to get more vids soon!

I like Glen Hansard.....Slow Rising and Falling Slowly are both great examples of excellent song writing!

He has come a long way from The Commitments!

I have..... The Cost by The Frames and Strict Joy by The Swell Season.

Garrett, I don't have Frames albums but I'd like to hear more of them. You are right, both of those songs are great! Strict Joy was a good album as well! You may like the Marketa album! :grinthumb Here's the official video for her single:

I love the new Glen Hansard solo! The good thing about him and Marketa parting is more music! This is Glens most emo album yet but that's what he's good at so I'm on board for sure! :grinthumb

My favorite track is Bird Of Sorrow! It definitely sounds like it could've been in the Once film but I don't think any of those songs had the emotional build this one had!
