I don't mind the rush singles through the eighties and nineties. I've got the Rush Chronicles, but you can see/hear a gradual decline from the classic-era onwards. 2112 is just great.

Heavy and progressive are not exclusive at all. It just seems that almost anything can be called progressive these days.

I use to listen to alot of Rap/Hip Hop back in my Middle School days :heheh:

We dedicated this song to a HS classmate of ours that was killed in a tragic car accident.

Damien and Nas came out with a collaborative album back in 2010, Distant Relatives.. great stuff..

I also use to listen to alot of spanish Hip Hop/Reggaeton.. It use to be good music, but now it just sucks :puke:

Progressive to me is rock that borrows heavily from jazz and or classical and pushes the boundries into more artful handling of music.
Rush fits squarely into this definition especially in their golden age.

But I know what you mean. Every college rock band that didn't sound exactly like pop was called progressive in the 80s. Like the term heavy metal, progressive was used to describe so many things it pretty much lost all meaning for a while.

good songs ya got there.

i used to have my doubts about it to, since i listened to both the good(2pac,wu tang, biggie, etc...) and the bad(lil wayne, drake, soulja boy) without any solid distinction between the two since i had only sorta heard the music without actually listening to it. i started listening to run dmc, and then its all said and done from there, then i eventually found my way back to the classics that my mom had introduced to me indirectly :D

it used to be great, excellent production, lyricism, and mc's who had great mc'ing abilities(great pitch, tone, delivery, etc.) it talked about anything from harmless, non-offensive and non misogynistic rhymes, the inner city and urban surroundings, humorous stories, afro-centricity, and socio-political stuff as well. now its nothing beyond idiotic materialism and misogyny expressed in such vulgar, unskillfull ways in an offensive manner.

for those who dont know, ya better learn lol

No thanks.

youre dead set on hating it even though the reasons why you hate it are only valid for the modern scene? typical

people say hip hop is this and hip hop is that, but they have no idea what true hip hop even is...

This thread seems to be going in circles to me.

Nothing wrong with liking rap/hip-hop music for those fans that do.

Nothing wrong with disliking it either, no different than art.

That's right. I don't like it because it does not entertain me at all. Music is supposed to be pleasing to the ear. I have not heard any rap or hip hop that even comes close to this very basic requirement so I don't like it.

Not everyone has to like what the media pushes.

For the record I don't like reality tv or most modern art either. It's great that people do I guess but you can only like what you like. To me there is no point forcing yourself to like something just because it's a widespread fad.

Guys I told you there was no point. :) I see you both make good posts in general in the forum but trying to convince someone to "like" something they just don't or stating your dislike of something we know you dislike is pointless. If someone is convinced after a couple exchanges it's an infinite circle. I think Khor, Big Ears, etc. have pretty much conceded it's a preference thing. The conversation about skills never really got debated. That's about the only thing to debate but any rap song brought up in existence isn't going to convince someone's ears to say "I enjoyed that".

Travis, I may not like the exact same rap as you but their are places you can discuss rap with fans like me. My all time favorite is 2Pac. I went through a phase where the majority of my cassettes were rap. At the time of Dr. Dre "The Chronic", 2pac "Me Against The World", Snoop Doggy Dogg "Doggystyle", Warren G. "Regulate...G Funk Era I listened to those albums continuously and I upgraded to having all of them on c.d. as must haves. I still love Hip-Hop but likely you don't like the more pop fun stuff I like. I love Kanye, Lil' Wayne (mostly Rebirth), The Black Eyed Peas, Mickey Avalon, Sage Francis, Childish Gambino, etc. All those, even some Sage Francis, remind me of the ego driven in a tongue in cheek way fun rap of Run DMC, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, The Beastie Boys, Tone Loc, Young MC, Sir-Mix-A-Lot and The Sugar Hill Gang. I like both sides of the coin.

My point is if you really like these groups you'll be happy presenting them. There's no rule against rap artist threads. Now remember, you are doing these to represent artist you like. In this demographic you obviously won't be converting but you have me, Jen, Beautiful Loser and a couple other wildcards who are open enough to it. If you want to be constructive make the most bad ass looking tribute and let's chat as fans. We have stricter rules about artist threads where it's less for criticism than open topic threads. You can at least talk rap and there and no it'll be respected within those walls. Let's have fun with it dude! :)

Having said all that this thread has run it's course and will be closed! :grinthumb
