I was just having a convo with the young fella and we were discussing what constitutes prog rock...I was saying ELO, Yes, Asia, and the like, were prog, young bloke reckons fair enough, but so is Dragonforce, Avantasia, Dream Theatre and Rhapsody, because of song construction and musical chops.....

I can see his point but i reckon they lean more towards the metal edge of the spectrum...what do you reckon ?

Well I don't see ELO as prog nor do I see Dragonforce as prog so I think there is a degree of incorrectness from both parties. ;)

I have 4 Dragonforce albums...they strike me as Speed Metal with flourishes of Power Metal, but Prog never occurred to me. It's widely known now they cannot reproduce their studio sound live in concert, I remember there was a huge debate among supporters and detractors about the studio trickery/gadgets used to get their sound. I am not sure they are even around any longer, haven't seen a new album in ages.:hm:

Last thing I heard was the lead singer left/was kicked out. But the guitarist...Li?...is the the leader or at least I thought so and were going to get a new singer and carry on.

But that was a couple years ago at least already MP...

Eldorado is ELO's prog masterpiece in my view Nolo...and a lot of their early work as well has prog elements. But later on there was more Pop than Prog in ELO's sound by intent.

Still one of my favorite 70's groups for sure.

Yeah ELO was indeed a prog band BEFORE Eldorado and including that one as well.

I didn't know the singer from DF was out there LG. Ok...well we'll see what happens. I like them. I really do. But IMO it almost seems that they took the music as far a it could go up to this point.

They are in need of a bit of re-invention.

I don't really know what the status of DragonForce is but if I'm not mistaken Sam Totman (I think that's his last name) wrote most of the songs and the lyrics for the band but I've also heard that he's kind of a drunk.

I'm pretty sure DF's moment in the sun is gone now though. They only got big in the first place because of Guitar Hero and even that isn't a big deal anymore.
