my favorite era is the harder rock/heavy metal era of 1979 to 1982 (Lovedrive, Animal Mag, and Blackout). I like everything they did in the 80's but they kinda got too commercial near the end. Still, I like everything they've ever put out. The 70's stuff ruled (although their first album is a bit directionless, they soon got it together and started making classic 70's rock).
I saw them in concert 3 times: 1984, 1985, and 1988.

Nice opener Lynch :grinthumb

I got into Scorpions big style in the late eighties, Animal Magnetism, Love at First Sting and Savage Amusement were three of my favourite albums at that time, I played them to death!

Great thread Lynch. :grinthumb

The live album from 1985 really opened the door to Scorpions music for me. I've been a fan ever since hearing it. It was one of the top 5 party albums at that time.

The Scorpions next album and technically their first album of the 80's was Animal Magnastism.

ScorpionsAnimalMagnetism.jpg

Track Listing:
  1. Make It Real
  2. Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)
  3. Hold Me Tight
  4. Twentieth Century Man
  5. Lady Starlight
  6. Falling in Love
  7. Only A Man
  8. The Zoo
  9. Animal Magnetism
Released in the spring of 1980, the album seems to have been met with pretty luke-warm reviews and to this day isn't as widely loved as it's predecessor Lovedrive, or the next couple of albums that followed it. Irregardless of reviews or album sales, this album was another stepping stone to getting more radio play which in turn makes more people aware of what they were doing and also gathered more fans for the band.

Personally, I love this album, from start to finish. I am a die-hard fan of all of the stuff they did from the late 70's into the 90's and this album is no exception

I'm just guessing here, but I would think that anyone that is only a casual fan of the band probably won't know most of the songs on the album, but anyone who has ever listened to classic rock radio in the past 30 years is most likely aware of the song, The Zoo. A song that did poorly on the charts but has turned into a classic rock (and metal) anthem of sorts.

The song starts slow and methodical, yet still seems to just grab ya by the seat of your pants and make you listen from start to finish. Great guitar work, including use of the 'talk box', something that Matthias Jabs has used in a number of Scorps tunes, but I would have to believe that this song is the one he is most noted for it's use.

Some other gems from this album:

Make It Real (there is also a great version of this on World Wide Live)

Don't Make No Promises - this song has a cool guitar riff and has one of my favorite early 80's verses. Cool chorus, but the verses and the groove of the music in them always gets me. :grinthumb

Falling In Love

Only A Man

I'd definitely suggest casual Scorps fans to give this album a chance. :cheers2

My favorite from that album IS Falling In Love...and Lady Starlight is one of their greatest ballads IMO.

Blackout is the Scorpions eighth studio album, released in March 1982. Another fantastic album by the boys from Hanover Germany. No One Like You scored the guys a pretty decent and really helped to push their name out their to a wider audience.

For me, this is another album that is solid from start to finish and another must-own from the Scorps.

Interesting sidenote #1 ... Klaus Meine lost his voice while the band was writing this album and eventually had to undergo throat surgery. Don Dokken was actually brought in to record the original demos for the album, although Klaus recovered from the surgery without any complications and recorded the album as planned.

Interesting sidenote #2, the guy on the front of the album cover is commonly mistaken as Rudolph Schenker (guitarist) from the band, but in fact it is actually the artist who came up with the concept in the first place. Rudolph does portray the character as a crazed inmate in the video for No One Like You. The setting for the video takes place in and around Alcratraz prison

A couple of my faves from this album, aside from the song above....

You Give Me All I Need

Can't Live Without You
