For anyone who doesn't know the difference, there is definitely a big difference between most of the music that the Scorpions put out in the 70's with what they put out in the 80's. For a good thread that focuses on the first 5 or 6 albums, please check out MetalPriest's thread - Scorpions - 70's Edition. :grinthumb

I'd like to start off by saying this isn't exclusively 80's, but the main part of this thread will be focusing around the lineup that the band carried through the 80's and beyond. The 80's would definitely be considered the band's most commercially successful period. In 1978, guitarist Uli Jon Roth left the band while on the Taken By Force tour and was replaced by Matthias Jabs. Once Jabs joined the lineup, the lineup would pretty much stay intact from that point all the way through the 80's....

Vocals: Klaus Meine
Guitar: Matthias Jabs
Guitar: Rudolph Schenker
Bass: Francis Buchholz
Drums: Herman Rarebell

The first album with the new lineup was 1979's Lovedrive. Original cover considered in some parts of the world to be too controversial and was banned in some countries. This was nothing new to the Scorps who had a number of previous album covers with similar issues.

There was a 'special guest' guitar player on this album as well. Rudolf Schenker's little brother Michael Schenker (noteable member of UFO and MSG), who had played with the band on their first two albums, played lead guitar on a couple of tracks on Lovedrive including the title track, Coast to Coast and Another Piece of Meat.

Track Listing:
  1. Loving You Sunday Morning – 5:36
  2. Another Piece of Meat – 3:30
  3. Always Somewhere – 4:56
  4. Coast to Coast – 4:42
  5. Can't Get Enough – 2:36
  6. Is There Anybody There? – 3:58
  7. Lovedrive – 4:49
  8. Holiday – 6:32
Something I find kind of interesting is that this album closed out much in the same fashion that many of their next few albums would end, that being on what I consider to be a "power ballad". (see the Official Power Ballad thread for more on this).

 great tune. That entire World Wide Alive album is great. When I get to that in my short album reviews later in the thread, I plan on posting a bunch of those vids. One of my alltime favorite concert albums.

One thing about the Scorps, out of the numerous times that I saw them in concert, they never one time failed to disappoint. Very tight band most of the time and always put on a great show for the fans. Energy from the first song to the last.

Great OP Lynch :grinthumb I really like both 70's and 80's Scorps, Matthias Jabs did a fantastic job as replacement for Uli Jon IMO and the band went on to make some stellar albums in the 80's. Some of which for me rank as and alongside their very best works.
Another rocker from 79's Lovedrive.

Nice thread, excellent band and the 80`s was their most successful period.

Classic albums from Lovedrive through to Blackout and then probably the album that raised their profile on a massive level was Love At First Sting.

Animal Magnetism is still my favourite Scorps album, was fortunate enough to see them on this tour and also the Blackout tour.

Great thread ! Yes ! 80's scorps ! 70's Scorps is more musicians music ( and i am a guitar player ) but the 80's is the stuff ! Hard rock perfected. Jabs is a real player. Check out the solos in the songs NOW ! and Arizona off of Blackout...Solos off of coming home and the same thrill off of LAFS, Solos on we let it rock ( RIPPING ! ) and the very very tasteful solo on Every minute every day off of Savage Amusement , The solo on hit between the eyes off of Crazy World....face melting !

Of course im biased here but...i think they were the best hard rock/ metal band of the 80's !

Not to mention Klauses voice :bow::bow::bow:
