I remember back in the end of the 70's my friend gave this to me to listen to along with Look Into The Future and Next, Journey's other two pre Perry records. Sure, I'd heard Infinity and Evolution but these records cemented my affinity for Neal Schon and his talent. He remains one of my all time favorite guitarists. Casual fans don't know these records exist.

Schon is very talented. Rolie has a knack for the keys, too.

Now that Journey is coming out with a new album, it would be nice to see them revisit their roots instead of Vamping up their hard rock edge.

Despite my early criticisms my secret is that I actually gave this album a lot of listens and like it more and more the more I hear it! I get Of a Lifetime stuck in my head very often! I've finally purchased the album and I'm glad! :grinthumb

From what I have heard literally, they are looking to rock. When they tried to play some of the pre-Perry stuff at the show I went to about six years ago the girls in the audience were whining about it and people were bitching. Most of them didn't know the material. I, on the other hand, knew that they were playing it in the first set and was thrilled. Schon tore it up. Many people don't realize that these guys are really good musicians, especially Deen the drummer. He also sings fantastic. Unfortunately, they have to play what they call the dirty dozen to keep their pop fans happy. 1975-1981 was the best Journey music to me. Even though Escape had numerous radio friendly songs, it's still one of the best rock albums I've ever heard.

Very nice review, I love the Perry era Journey, absolute class but the early stuff is really good.

All three albums are very good but different to what you come to expect from Journey.

Of A lifetime is a classic :grinthumb

The early Journey is nothing like the ballad-driven , pop anthem Journey most fans know, in fact, once the first song begins, you will probably go “Wow, who in the hell are these guys!!”.

I laughed when I read this because I was on board from THIS 1st album and went “Wow, who in the hell are these guys!!” when Infinity came out. :heheh:

I love every phase of this band! :D
