Re: Johnny Winter

^^ Yeah it's different .. but I thought I'd throw it out anyway, I have all the tracks but on compilation cd's .. actually I kind of really enjoy them but the gear isn't up there with his later stuff. The official studio releases are for the most part top dollar IMO.

Johnny also put on some great performances with his brother, Edgar. Everyone has got to know Frankenstein:

Re: Johnny Winter

I'm a big fan of Johnny's as well and saw him live several times where like fellow underrated guitarists Alvin Lee and Leslie West always gives a great performance.

Strangely enough like Wolf was turned on to him by a relative (a cousin)who threw on "Captured Live" when I was over his house and was blown away by the guitar playing on "Highway 61 Revisited". This was back in the 70's and was into bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith ect. so I never really heard anything like it.

Does anyone remember the Jimi Hendrix album "Woke Up This Morning and Found Myself Dead" which Johnny Winter was supposed to have played on? I remember reading an interview with Johnny in an old guitar player magazine where he didn't speak too highly of the record and said that "he wasn't into that Jim Morrison shit" and seemed to feel that it was a waste of time. He also spoke of Jimi Hendrix and mentioned how they were good friends and how Jimi would tell him not to be insecure about playing the blues just because he's white.

Though more recently Johnny claims that he never played on the album. Not sure if he doesn't remember or doesn't want to remember.

Re: Johnny Winter

As far as "Woke Up This Morning and Found Myself Dead"...I tend to believe that Johnny wasn't on it. He really despised that his name was associated with that recording(I think I heard that recording a long time ago in the early 80's(it may have been under a different name too) through a friend & it was crap (I know it was supposedly the 3 of them but I have no idea if that was the title on my friend's record). It was not even worth searching out because it was so bad (I didn't even want a copy & back then I was heavy into The Doors & Winter).

Winter was pretty amazed with Hendrix & the 2 jammed at least 10 times. There is one supposedly decent recording to come out of those two a song titled "The Things That I Used to Do" which is on a Hendrix boxset titled Lifelines. Johnny just ususlly played rhythm guitar on their jams but on this recording the two traded off lead w/ Johnny playing slide. Johnny said Hendrix was tough to talk to because he was high all the time.

Winter jammed with Joplin also & they actually became pretty close to having a serious relationship

I have to try and dig up that magazine which I believe was Guitar Player or possibly Guitar World where I'm pretty sure that Winter said that he played on the record. And remember he talking about it in a very negative light and seemed upset that the one record released of Hendrix and him playing together was so lousy. Though I'm going on memory and could be wrong.

I googled Johnny Winter interview and came up with one he did with UniVibes where he denied playing on the record or ever meeting Jim Morrison. Though I seem to remember in the other interview I read him saying something about Morrison being stoned out of his mind during the recording and Winter also saying "I wasn't into that Jim Morrison shit". Though again I could be wrong.

Sox, these are the tracks on the record :

Red House
Woke Up This Morning and Found Myself Dead
Bleeding Heart
Morrison's Lament
Tomorrow Never Knows
Uranus Rock
Outside Woman Blues
Sunshine of Your Love

I used to have it on vinyl and sold it on ebay recently. It was certainly nothing to write home about and was actually pretty lousy to be honest. The only reason I kept it for so long was for collecting purposes being it allegedly had Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Johnny Winter on the same record.
