Waylon's Discography
It's been 9 years to the day since the country music legend Waylon Jennings passed away. Why am I bringing this up on a classic rock forum? Well, anyone that knows me may remember that I've long been a fan of the man, his music, and what he stood for. Also for those not old enough to remember, and those old enough to have maybe forgotten, Waylon started out in the music business as Buddy Holly's bassist. Actually stepping back even further by a couple of years, Waylon was a DJ when he met and befriended Buddy.
Waylon did spearhead one of the more important "movements" in country music history in the late 60's and into the 70's; known of course as the "outlaw movement". As some may not know, country music then was almost completely controlled by the record companies in Nashville. The artists were given the musicians to record with, the songs written by ~their~ writers (not always, but all too often), and the artists were told who they could tour with, when, where, why and how they would be touring. Waylon was completely against it. Musicians in rock music by the late 60's were given a lot of freedom with their own music and creativity, but country music still had a long ways to go. Waylon was one of the few who had the balls to stand up to the execs in Nashville and tell them to stick it. By the early 70's it finally paid off where he was given control of his own destiny by a new record deal from a non-nashville company and he rocketted to stardom.
Anyway, I'm not going to go into a long bio on Waylon. Wikipedia has a pretty good page highlighting his career. Unfortunately, Waylon passed away due to complications of diabetes on Feb 13, 2002.
I just wanted to say that I'm sitting here, thinking about him and remembering him. Waylon was a huge part of my life while growing up as well as into my adulthood, getting married, having kids, etc. My son, my father and I spend time together and there is always a couple of Waylon CDs nearby, always getting played. When I hear Waylon, it brings back a lot of memories of hunting and fishing trips with my dad, as well as new memories with him and my son. I just texted my son letting him know that it was 9 yrs ago when we lost Waylon. He couldn't believe it has been that long and said he still remembers it like it was yesterday, when I heard about Waylon's death on the radio, sitting at the kitchen table and crying.
I miss ya Hoss! Thanks for the memories and thanks for the songs that have been a big part of my life.
I made this sig image on the 1yr anniversary of his passing. Used it
for a few years on a couple of forums. Nothing fancy and certainly
shows next to zero photoshop skills, but it's good enough for me.
