Waylon's Discography

It's been 9 years to the day since the country music legend Waylon Jennings passed away. Why am I bringing this up on a classic rock forum? Well, anyone that knows me may remember that I've long been a fan of the man, his music, and what he stood for. Also for those not old enough to remember, and those old enough to have maybe forgotten, Waylon started out in the music business as Buddy Holly's bassist. Actually stepping back even further by a couple of years, Waylon was a DJ when he met and befriended Buddy.

Waylon did spearhead one of the more important "movements" in country music history in the late 60's and into the 70's; known of course as the "outlaw movement". As some may not know, country music then was almost completely controlled by the record companies in Nashville. The artists were given the musicians to record with, the songs written by ~their~ writers (not always, but all too often), and the artists were told who they could tour with, when, where, why and how they would be touring. Waylon was completely against it. Musicians in rock music by the late 60's were given a lot of freedom with their own music and creativity, but country music still had a long ways to go. Waylon was one of the few who had the balls to stand up to the execs in Nashville and tell them to stick it. By the early 70's it finally paid off where he was given control of his own destiny by a new record deal from a non-nashville company and he rocketted to stardom.

Anyway, I'm not going to go into a long bio on Waylon. Wikipedia has a pretty good page highlighting his career. Unfortunately, Waylon passed away due to complications of diabetes on Feb 13, 2002.

I just wanted to say that I'm sitting here, thinking about him and remembering him. Waylon was a huge part of my life while growing up as well as into my adulthood, getting married, having kids, etc. My son, my father and I spend time together and there is always a couple of Waylon CDs nearby, always getting played. When I hear Waylon, it brings back a lot of memories of hunting and fishing trips with my dad, as well as new memories with him and my son. I just texted my son letting him know that it was 9 yrs ago when we lost Waylon. He couldn't believe it has been that long and said he still remembers it like it was yesterday, when I heard about Waylon's death on the radio, sitting at the kitchen table and crying.

I miss ya Hoss! Thanks for the memories and thanks for the songs that have been a big part of my life.

I made this sig image on the 1yr anniversary of his passing. Used it
for a few years on a couple of forums. Nothing fancy and certainly
shows next to zero photoshop skills, but it's good enough for me.

Re: Waylon Jennings - it's been 9 yrs

Doesn't seem like it's been 9 years already to me Lynch.

I never followed him, but I did enjoy his collaboration with Willie, Kris and Johnny in "The Highwaymen".

And although I am a little embarrassed to admit it, I thought his narration of the old Dukes of Hazzard television series was great.

And hope you are feeling better too Lynch, I miss your "unique" personality when you're gone for long periods of time.

The Highwaymen was definitely good stuff. He also did a collaboration album with Jerry Reed, Mel Tillis and Bobby Bare in the late 90's called "Old Dogs". I wouldn't match it up against the first Highwaymen album, but it's still good as it was a live album, recorded by all of them on stage at the same time. You can tell they were all having fun with it and with each other. :D

Anyway, if you are ever interested in looking for some good old fashioned 'outlaw country' from Waylon, let me know. I can direct you towards some great stuff and not necessarily the stuff you'd ever hear on the radio. I'd be more than happy to (again, if interested)

And although I am a little embarrassed to admit it, I thought his narration of the old Dukes of Hazzard television series was great.
nothing to be embarrased about as far as I'm concerned. While the show itself may have been corny at times, it was successful. I loved his narration on the show. Funny line from the actual theme song (the album version, not for the show) Good Ol' Boys....

I'm a good ol' boy
you know my mama loved me
but she don't understand
they keep-a-showin' my hands
and not my face on TV.
(haha)

:heheh:

Appreciate it. We seem to have (finally) figured out some of the "stuff" that I've been dealing with and what's been wrong with me. Nothing good, but I'm not dying *(yet)*

Couldn't agree more. Waylon is my all-time favorite country artist, outlaw or otherwise. Definitely shed a few tears this week when thinking about him.

Here's a good song (and one most folks probably won't know) with a great slideshow of pictures that someone put together.

I'll be sure to shed a few tears whilst drinking....I mean THINKING about Waylon this week, Lynch! My father first introduced me to Waylon as a young boy and though his music never quite sank in until I was old enough to have experienced his sentiments/laments myself, I've always understood that his music was something beyond my own comprehension. The key word in that sentence being "was." These days I'm more of an "am."

Hell yes man! My father is the one that played Waylon all the time when I was a kid and it stuck with me to this very day. We've raised our glasses many-a-time to ol' Waylon and will continue to do so for years to come.

And if it's whiskey you're pouring, make mine a double! :cheers2

Re: Waylon Jennings - it's been 9 yrs

Waylon Jennings is one of a handful of country artist that I really like.
I was heavily into him when I was about 26 to 29 .Something that my hard rock, metal and prog mates found a bit amusing at the time. Though most would say that they liked his music when I played it.

 Hail Waylon Jennings

a true country music icon.
