How do you arrange your CD collection?

I do mine alphabetically and then chronologically. For example my Deep Purple collection is nestled between Charlie Daniels and Rick Derringer. Then I put the albums in order of thier release. Shades of Deep Purple, Book of Talisyn, etc. Just wondering.

I keep them in piles and boxes.
the ones I've listened to most recently are nearest the top.
the ones I want are, of course, on the bottom.

I have a lot of respect for the idea of keeping CDs organized but it's never worked out for me. I'm not a big fan of alphabetical order because I get severely pissed off when the issue comes up of whether a name like "Neil Young" would go with the Ns or the Ys. :D

I keep my CDs in ridiculously large piles situated in every different surface of my room including the floor and on top of book collections....

I keep them in alphabetical order by artist and then by album title. I also keep my music separated by catagory - rock, classical, jazz, blues, Hawaiian, reggae, musical theater, country. Rock pretty much is the largest catagory cause I don't break it down into those stupid catagories like classic, shoe gazer, lo-fi, punk or twee-pop cuddlecore BS.

I'm very anal about keeping my CDs in order, which is weird because I am really not like that about much else.

Alphabetically by artist, chronologically by album. I have two rooms where I keep CDs. In my studio/study, I keep the artists that I consider most essential. The others are in our living room. I keep my classical albums in the studio/study separated from all other categories, just to help me keep track of what I have.

I have mine arranged more or less by genre (as loosely defined by me, depending on what will fit on a particular shelf in my rack). I've got one separate rack that consists mostly of Yes,Genesis, Rush, Led Zeppelin (also with some Who,Kansas, Journey, and Styx mixed in) because I have so many CDs by those bands. I have another separate rack that's strictly Todd Rundgren/Utopia CDs because I've got almost all of them.
I've got maybe 450 CDs so I need some kind of system, but it's not a real monumental task to get them organized.

i used to be really anal with how i kept my cds organized. now i have 3 binders and a stack of randoms next to my stereo. there's the small 25 disc case for work. a 96 disc binder for the good stuff and a huge ass 300 disc binder for the rest. the closest to 'organized' as it stands now is trying to keep my amon tobin and boards of canada together.

This is how I do it. Since I just moved I will be pulling out over 2500 CDs from moving boxes onto my shelves soon. Anyone want to help?

That's okay. I'm still waiting to get my collection out of boxes and onto shelves. That of course requires I also put some shelves together. So far I've got two shelves put back together and one box of CDs out. I'm sure by the time I've got everything out and set up I'll probably be ready to move again. Such is my life. :D
