Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Killer Wolf's retro rock and metal thread.

I will be featuring bands that are heavily influenced by that wonderful musical time scape the 70's......... Feel free to contribute anything that is rocking and has a strong 70's musical vibe. Some of these bands may have discographies that span a bit before or beyond the allotted time frame but most will fall within the 2000 decade.

First up....

WICKED MINDS :

These guys are a great band hailing from Italy ( a great and under appreciated country for prog and heavy music of all forms ) . Their main influences seem to be Deep Purple and Uriah Heep.

The keyboardist Paolo "Apollo" Negri is quite talented as is the rest of the line up. Lucio Calegari (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, lead vocals), Enrico Garilli (bass), Andrea Concarotti (drums, 1987-2007), J.C. Cinel (lead vocals,2004-08), Riccardo Lovotti (drums, 2007-present)

Discography :

1999 Return to Uranus

2003 Crazy Technicolor Delirium Garden

2004 From the Purple Skies

2006 Witchflower CD/DVD

2007 Live at Burg Herzberg Festival 2006

They are currently on Black Widow records

I own all but the first two and I am still searching :D

LONELY KAMEL are a four piece band from Oslo, Norway, who mix old school Heavy Psych w/ Stoner Metal. They have one S/T album that was released in 2008 that I am currently wearing out my CD player with. I am waiting ( rather impatiently ) for their 2010 release entitled Blues for the Dead to arrive in my mail and will update later. I dig this stuff \m/

The Watch are a prog band from Italy, and they are most distinctive from lead singer Simone Rosetti's voice, which is uncannily similar to Peter Gabriel's. This helps to make The Watch's music sound very much like Genesis. So far they have 4 albums:

Ghost (2001)

Vacuum (2004)

Primitive (2007)

Planet Earth? (2010)

And here's the only video of an original song on Youtube:

From Greece, Ciccada's debut release 'A Child in the Mirror' from 2010 is definitely 'retro-prog' influenced by Gentle Giant, Gryphon, Jethro Tull, and Renaissance. An eclectic mixture of progressive folk, symphonic prog. with a medievil ambience. Wonderful winds and gorgeous strings are very compelling and melodic, yet time signatures shift moments to a higher energy with guitars, keyboards, and winds.

Mostly instrumental though there is limited female vocal elements that add charm to this lovely fairy tale and folklore piece.

Beautifully done.

BLACK BONZO, hail from Skellefteå, Sweden. They have three albums out : The Lady of the Light 2004, Sound of the Apocalypse 2007, and last years, Guillotine Drama, which I just picked up last week. These guys sound as if they might actually be one of the great heavy prog groups of the 70's.that is if you didn't know any better. I hear Deep Purple, Queen,
Yes, King Crimson ,Uriah Heep ( among others ,one song even recalls Judas Priest ) mixed into a all out Heavy Progressive stew.
And oh what a tasty stew it is !!!! Definitely worthy of hunting down ....

^^^Very tasty:grinthumb

In complete contrast and by passing purgatory and falling straight to the ninth level of hell awaits Electric Wizard.

The first time I heard Dopethrone was absolutely floored. It was a listening experience I had not heard since I listened to Blue Cheer's Outsideinside for the first time some 25 years ago.

Vincebus Eruptum/Outsideinside collides with Master of Reality.

This is a colossal assault.

SLAB HEAVY!

I was thinking on whether or not to included stuff of this nature the other day and seeing how you are seeing it in the same light that's good enough for me. It must have a strong 70's influenced/ 70's vibe if you hear early Sabbath in it as much as this stuff has it

Thanks for helping me come to this conclusion :grinthumb

BTW .I have all their stuff

Anima Mundi are a Cuban prog band who have been active since 1996 and have three albums released from 2002 - 2010. They sing in English and are very keyboards and bass heavy, much like Yes and ELP were. What seperates them from those two though, are the more rock n' roll styled vocals of Carlos Sosa, the fact there's a girl in the band and a generally more symphonic sound ala Genesis.

Their albums are 2002's Septentrión:

2008's Jagannath Orbit:

And 2010's The Way:

I couldn't find any tracks on youtube, but you can listen to a few on their myspace here:
