Serving Time In The Middle Of Nowhere

Slayer is heavy metal band from Huntington Park, California that formed in 1981. The band was founded by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King and are credited as one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal acts, along with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax.

Slayer's music involve fast tremolo picking, atonal guitar solos, double bass drumming, and vocals that are shouted. The band's lyrics and album art, cover topics such as serial killers, satanism, religion and warfare have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits and strong criticism from religious groups and the public.

They have received four Grammy nominations which had them win one in 2007 for the song "Eyes of the Insane", and one in 2008 for the song "Final Six". They are also considered the heaviest band of all time. Reign in Blood has been an influence to extreme metal and thrash metal bands since its release. The album has been hailed as the "heaviest album of all time."

The first metal I got to see live was Slayer. They scared the hell out of me and are probably one of the most intense live bands you can still see.
They are the reigning kings of thrash metal.

Re: Slayer

I am a huge Slayer fan. I own everything that they have ever released on CD and even have a vinyl copy of Live Undead . I also have three DVD's .
Their first five full lengths are IMO classics and some of my favorite martial
ever . Although their Cds did drop off a bit in quality after Seasons in the Abyss, I still like the CDs that followed and consider Christ Illusion and World Painted Blood to be returns to form .

SLAYER !!!!!!!! \m/

Re: Slayer

Hey it's Mud back in "Official" action again.

Nice job on the OP, and there is no denying their stature in the Metal world, one of the legends.

However I am not a huge fan of theirs, I only have "Reign in Blood" and it satiates my appetite when I'm in an ultimate Thrash metal mood.

Re: Slayer

Pure power, an atmospherical onslaught, and acute aggression. Possessing injurious nature, calamity, sorrow, and moral depravity. Slayer took a rapid descent straight to the ninth circle of hell. Contrary, noxious, ill intented, and diminishes the weak, pompous, struggling and suffering music of the early/mid 80's. The "Unholy Trinity"= Reign in Blood/South of Heaven/Seasons in the Abyss.

Re: Slayer

Do you own all three of the "Holy Trinity" Joe?

I just find Slayer...a little too repetitive for my taste.:hm:

But I do like the one album I have, and I don't like Anthrax at all.

Re: Slayer

Nothing personal LG, but I think you may lack an ear for this type of brutal thrash.
Slayer are far from repetitive to these ears. Reign in Blood and South of Heaven are two completely different albums ,as are Hell Awaits and Season in the Abyss, etc. etc.

Perhaps this stuff is just not to your taste. :D

Re: Slayer

Hey LG,

I have all of Slayer's albums. Like Wolf said, it's brutal thrash metal. I don't find it repetitive. There's certain music that I have heard that sounded repetitive to my ears but not to others. Remember every sub-genre has it's musical direction and every band in that sub-genre has thier own "formula" for lack of a better word. Of course there is other factors that attribute to the appreciation of an artist. Anyway, I'm rambling on here.

I find thier first two studio albums monochromatic, high treble ambience. With Reign in Blood, much credit has to go to the producer Rick Ruben. He also produced South of Heaven in which Slayer somewhat slowed down the tempo. Seasons in the Abyss combines both from those two albums.

The next three releases, with Divine Intervention being a cover album are weaker than the "Unholy Trinity". With God Hates Us All the lyrical compositions become more brutal. Christ Illusion sees an improvement as does World Painted Blood.

BTW, I'm not a big fan of Anthrax either.

Re: Slayer

I love Slayer!!

When I first heard them I thought "what is this crap?", and I laughed at Tom Araya's vocals. But they definitley grew on me. Their best album is Reign in Blood; South of Heaven being a very close second.

my favorite Slayer songs are

Mandatory Suicide
Skeletons of Society
Behind The Crooked Cross
Jesus Saves
Raining Blood
South of Heaven
Dissident Agressor
Spill The Blood
