The Album

Since the ending of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page had a lot of time on his hands. He has constantly dabbled in solo work, did a couple super group gigs, worked with a couple Zeppelin members for various events, and has feverishly tried to re-unite Led Zeppelin, to no avail. Then he hooked up with David Coverdale , who surprisingly sounds like a Robert Plant clone and is a person Plant despised, and Denny Carmassi, who is heavily influenced by the drum style of John Bonham. Was this an attempt to goad Plant into a reunion? It seemed to work because Plant and Page did work together from 1994 to 1998 to tour and release two albums together. Page would never see an official reunion of Led Zeppelin until 2007, when all the surviving members played together, along with Bonham’s son, Jason, for a one time show in London.

Even though Coverdale*Page is a fantastic album, it is pretty much a forgotten collaboration. The album caused quite a stir with Led Zeppelin fans, most of whom gave the album negative reviews. Critics cut the album to shreds, which is pure poppy cock, IMO. Coverdale*Page, which was a highly publicized album release, did quite well on the rock charts for a short period of time. The three singles that were released from this album all reached in the top 20 on the US rock charts. This fame would be short lived, though, since this was the only album between Coverdale and Page, and they only played a few live shows together after the album release. Too bad since I find these two musicians to be very good together. It would seem everyone was quick to sweep this album under the carpet to be forgotten.

The album is very polished. The songs are well written and heavily laden with blues. Jimmy Page had almost 13 years to work on this material, and you can tell it, too, from how perfectly the whole album was executed. This is some of the best work from Page since his hey days with Zeppelin in the 70’s and also some of the best vocal work from Coverdale. The listening experience from this album is very unique, you get the bluesy riffs from Page and the glam metal influence of Coverdale, quite a spectacular mix! The album has three slow, bluesy ballads, which are epic and make the album a classic that will delight any fan of ballads. Coverdale*Page is the closest you will get to hearing a glam inspired Led Zeppelin album and well worth giving it a listen.

The Music

”Shake My Tree”~ This song is a heavy hitter, with loud percussion. You will hear Coverdale scream a lot like Plant, but you also hear his glam metal gruff. Nothing weak about this song.

”Waiting On You”~This song sounds as if it were taken from a Whitesnake playlist. This is how Whitesnake would have sounded with a guitarist like Page to do his finger magic. Another solid song.

”Take Me For a Little While”~A beautiful ballad. Slow and decadent. Some of Page’s best work, IMO. Just listen to his breaking riff after the chorus and the mid song solo , it is stellar. This song proves that Coverdale definitely has a voice to call his own, he is at his best! This is a song I like to play on repeat, I enjoy it that much.

”Pride and Joy”~You will hear the Zeppelin influence in this song. The lyrics are sexually charged, and the melody is catchy. Not to mention there is a pretty cool harmonica solo layered over some banging drums.

”Over Now”~There is a great riff in this song, but otherwise, the song is just some Led Zep sounding filler. Not a bad song, but nothing spectacular. I bet Plant rolled his eyes when he heard this song, Coverdale sounds remarkably Plant-ish.

”Feeling Hot”~ A very fast paced song, with another hot riff from Page. Definitely a glam influenced song about getting out and getting laid. A nice addition to an already great album.

”Easy Does It”~Starts off as a slow song, not one of the best songs on the album, but still shows some great guitar work from Page in the first half of the song. The percussion doesn’t start until the half way point, and changed the entire mood and tempo of the song. I didn’t much care for this song, although the melody is catchy.

”Take a Look at Yourself”~A song that reminds me of “Tracks of My Tears” but with the guitar work of Page and some sweet vocals. A great power ballad from the duo, too bad it didn’t sound all that original, though.

”Don’t Leave Me This Way”~ Another slow ballad. This song shows another side to Page, as does any of the ballads on this album. All I can say about this song is one word “Fantastic”.

”Absolution Blues”~ The best written song on the album. Starting off slow, adding instruments one by one, then BAM! In your face riffage along with vocals.

”Whisper a Prayer for the Dying”~An incredible closing to the album. One thing this duo did on a grand scale was create 3 fantastic ballads. I think Coverdale is at his best on this ballad, and the synthesized orchestrations on this song are really cool. The darkness of this song, is unlike anything Page ever did with Led Zeppelin.

If you ever find this album, pick it up, you will not be disappointed. This is Page’s best work since his Led Zeppelin days. It is a strong album and only one track I was not overly fond of.

My rating for listening pleasure 4.5/5

this song sounds like it could have been on Physical Grafitti if you ask me. VERY VERY heavily sounding mid-70's Zeppelin.

I also really liked Take Me For A Little While. I actually played that a couple of times this morning. :grinthumb

Per normal, great writeup Magic!

Re: Coverdale*Page~ S/T (1993)

This is a great album. I bought it on cassette when it came out in 1993 and a few years ago I bought it also on cd. I've listened to it a lot in the 90's. There is some magic chemistry between Coverdale and Page that you can't deny. Very solid album which can stand (with pride an joy :D) against any Led Zeppelin album. :grinthumb

Very good choice and an excellent review Magic :cheers2.

Never heard of this album before...

Definitely worth your time to give it a listen. One of the great things about YouTube, you can find full albums to spin before you buy (or download)

@joker1961

Again, thank you for the nice comment.

I really need to find the motivation to write reviews again :)

This was a great album that should have had at least one follow up.

I bought it when it came out, and I've been meaning to find another copy on CD.
