Re: The Official "The Darkness" Thread

I was listening to Knockers today, and thought to myself "I need some more material by these guys, seriously I've had one album for like 3 years now" and within the hour I downloaded Permission To Land :D

True story! :heheh:

For shame Sal. You should've had "Permission to Land" ages ago. It's only the best album ever (or at least I think it is). At least you corrected such a grave injustice quickly. :D

Re: The Official "The Darkness" Thread

Permission To Land was one of the cd's of the decade...bollocks to all the retro rip off nonsense..when I first heard "Growing on me " it was like a breath of fresh air ..I remember thinking "ahh at last real music" ...alas the second cd was garbage and was flung from a speeding car never to disgrace my cd player again...

Having said that ...listening to PtoL is always a pleasure and Love on the Rocks With no Ice is a classic track that has few equals

Re: The Official "The Darkness" Thread

Well I of course agree with you on "Permission To Land" but "One Way Ticket To Hell....And Back" being garbage? That I certainly don't agree with as it's a favorite of mine. The panflute solo that opened the album was a mistake but beyond that it is a great album that really expanded The Darkness' style. It still housed great rock songs like "One Way Ticket", "Is It Just Me?", and "Bald" while incorperating new elements such as piano rock in "English Country Garden", the synthesizer in "Girlfriend" (which is an instrument that Justin Hawkins certainly has shown his love for in more recent work), traditional Scottish folk blended with hard rock in "Hazel Eyes", and more. Yes, "Permission To Land" is of course superior but it's follow up shouldn't be written off much less be labeled as "garbage".

As it does with me, but I suppose we'll just agree that we've opposite opinions on "One Way Ticket To Hell.....And Back". :D

I remember them bursting onto the scene in 2003 and I thought I like these guys, they were like an explosion of lemon-fresh fragrance in a stale room :)

I only have Permission To Land, which I haven't listened to for yonks, must give it another airing soon!

Yeah that seems to be the common reaction when people read this thread. :heheh:

Also (out of the blue) I would like to suggest some of The Darkness' B-sides since they are some of the best I've heard. Here's a great rock song off the "Is It Just Me?" single, "Shake (Like A Lettuce Leaf)". It has a great groove :grinthumb...

Re: The Official "The Darkness" Thread

So I stumbled across something today that I found really interesting. I guess back in the day before The Darkness had a record contract or anything and were only playing bars and small gigs they appeared on this show called "Roadies". Basically, this follows them on the way to one gig and all that goes wrong under Murphy's Law. I thought it was quite an interesting thing to watch considering how it's not very often that you see this sort of video documentation of a (inevitably really popular) band in their really early stages.
