Fiona's an artist that I think definitely needs her own thread! To start I'm going to plagiarize myself from another thread on how I found and came to appreciate her:
"Before "Tidal" I was into just guitar rock. The only female artist I had started to get into was Jewel and I had crossed the bridge into Tori Amos yet. I had heard "Shadowboxer" on MTV and I wasn't blown away initially but something intrigued me about it. It was a groovy, jazzy style I never heard in any my music and Fiona sang with a conviction I had never heard vocally before. It was also the first time I felt the power of a piano in a pop song. After that I saw the c.d. in the store I couldn't stop being drawn to the cover.
Something about Fiona intrigued me and after I picked it up and put it back a dozen times I finally gave in and bought it. Needless to say, I loved it. It evokes more internal soul than almost anything since. This c.d. opened the floodgates to female artist as well as the piano which has been my favorite instrument ever since!"
My favorite tracks and one of my favorites of all time is "Never Is A Promise"! There's is VERY few piano melodies that flow like that one and I just sink into as that one. The orchestration and her voice, one often filled with venom and deep jazzy soul becomes beautifully vulnerable like the song!
My other favorites from Fiona are:
"Fast As You Can"
"Limp"
"Not About Love"
"Extraordinary Machine"
Fiona brings such an old soul to music and I don't believe any other female artist puts so much of themselves into their song. When she's angry I believe her to the point where it's like "Stay away from her!" When she is vulnerable and open it's a rawness right to the bones. When she shows a little humor you know that she's truly found a moment to smile!
The c.d. i would recommend even though "Tidal" was my introductory c.d. is "When The Pawn...."! It's just solid from track to track and takes the energy and soul of the first c.d. and doubles it!
I'm sure a lot of people already know her music but i think she deserves a thread just for her!

Another fan of Fiona. S & S love your initial story about finding Fiona. I heard "Shadowboxer" on the radio and immediately had to have the album. Once I got the album I couldn't take it off my cd player. I was drawn in by her voice. I was so nuts with her that I had missed her NYC appearence and drove to Philly to see her in 1997. I've bin a big fan ever since and have seen her numerious times including her breakdown at Roseland where she stomped off the stage cursing and never to return.
Favorite songs:Never is a Promise, Carrion, Paper Bag, Love Ridden, I Know, Shadowboxer, Not about Love(Jon Brion album version), O' Sailor. HEr cover of Across the Universe too.
Here is a few pictures I've taken of her over the years
Fiona at Virgin Records
Fiona with Nick Creek at Central Park 08
Fiona in Central Park 06

I may be biased Aktivator but you have really good taste in music! On my checklist for people I have to see live before I die, Fiona is one of a small handful I have yet to see! Seeing as how she takes a long time between albums she's going to be hard for a small town NH guy like me to catch but it would be a dream to see her! I have a healthy jealousy for your experiences!
p.s. I LOVE the awesome pictures! Right this second the second pic is my favorite!

S & S thanks people that enjoy my pictures make me feel happy. I don't show them to brag or anything just like to talk about music and show my pictures hoping people get enjoy them.
In regards to Fiona I really hope she puts out another album. The last one Extraordinary Machine only came out because it got leaked by a Seattle Radio Station and a number of NYC fans (me included) started to make waves
about Sony releasing the album the rumor was that Sony didn't like the album and scrapped it or that Fiona scrapped it. NYC fans picked Sony's offices see picture below(I couldn't make it but I knew two people there) and Fiona saw it on the news and shortly went into the studio to re-record it. The first picture above is from her first performance at Virgin Megastore where she thanked her fans for giving her the support to force her back into the studio.
It's come out since then that she really doesn't like to record and its sort of doubtful she will record a new album without someone pushing her into the studio. I would expect the next album to be with another band and not her solo. She has recorded with Nickel Creek.

I'll push her! For Extraordinary Machine, I have both versions but aside from a couple songs I like the redone version better. What side of the fence are you on on this one Aktivator?
By the way, feel free to drop any more pictures in this thread that you want Aktivator! It's really made this thread awesome and seeing as Fionas in my top ten artist of all time it's worth it!
