In the 80s I really got into R.E.M., U2, Smithereens, Billy Idol, Bruce Hornsby & the Range, The Cars, The Fixx, Huey Lewis & the News (Sorry-I know - but I did get to see Robert Cray open up for them at a show I saw), INXS, Men at Work and a lot of the synth one hit wonder bands on MTV like Flock of Seagulls, Missing Persons, Cutting Crew, Human League, Naked Eyes & Wang Chung. I still like Tony Carey's Planet P Project. For some reason that first album has stuck with me.

Just brutal. I think the MTV/music video movement was more of a dentriment to music as it was more about producing "hit" videos than musical composition. Due to most of the music produced in the 80's that I couldn't stand I went back to discover music from the late 60's/early 70's. Some of the bands I did become a fan of were Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer and a handful of others.

I mostly agree! Although there was at the least one good thing connected with MTV back in those days, which was The Headbangers Ball! Many of the videos shown on HB were excellent, imo. And although some were over produced, or possibly of the cheesy variety, I almost always made a point of tuning in to catch that show more than any other on MTV. Some of the hosts of the various MTV shows weren't fantastic, but many of the bands were, imo! I also think that some of the bands that had their videos played rather excessively both benefitted quite a lot with the major exposure, but on the flip side, some of those bands and also certain videos were burned out before very long, too!

I was a fan of many of the excellent bands previously posted in this thread, and was listening to the music before the invent of MTV. I greatly enjoyed a couple of other shows that were mostly of the live performance variety, Don Kirschner's Rock Concert and The Midnight Special. I believe some of those shows are available on DVD's, but I don't think Headbanger's Ball is?

^^I have looked for Headbangers Ball on DVD and haven't found any information, unfortunately.
I agree that HeadBanger's Ball was awesome for the most part
not only in the 80's but the 90's as well. Now days they tend to suck playing mostly "core" but even now they have some good shows once and awhile.

In the early 80s I was stationed in South Korea. At the time you could pick up cassettes (not original) real cheap. Some of the bands were new to me, and I quickly became a fan.

- Vandenburg
- Saxon
- Krokus
- Rough Cut
- Triumph
- Judas Priest
- Dokken

...to name a few

First part of the 80's I mainly listened to pop, although I also got to listen to a lot of classic rock as it's what my dad always played. When I was about sixteen I started listening to Europe, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, and started pilfering my dad's collection, especially AC/DC. Then I discovered Queensryche in '88 after hearing Operation: Mindcrime reviewed on BBC Radio 1's Friday Night Rock Show - they became my favourite group until well into the nineties. Other bands/artists I listened to a lot in the 80's were The Cult, Fleetwood Mac, Judas Priest, Saxon, Megadeth, Metallica, Helloween, Guns N' Roses, Skid Row, Scorpions, Dokken, Stryper, Kingdom Come, Cinderella, Great White, Iron Maiden, INXS, Queen, Heart, Roxy Music, All About Eve, Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Lou Gramm, Ozzy Osbourne. I'm bound to have forgotten some
