80s is a lot easier...PRINCE. Possibly the most overrated performer of all time.
Depeche Mode is on the list, but I can't think of anyone else at the moment. |
Depeche Mode are simply amazing....
I'd go with Motley Crue. I really don't see how they are anywhere near as good as people make them out to be. | |

| Re: Most Overrated Bands of the 1980's! I agree with MP and Soot, but I'm going to join in the fun anyways U2 - well, in the 80's they had some decent stuff. It was really more of the shit they've done in the 90's and 00's that I think is incredibly overrated. REM - again, had a few good tunes but overall, never got the draw they garnered. The Pixies - absolute crap. Seriously, of all the college/modern rock bands that got attn in the 80's, why this noisy garbage got any press at all is beyond me. Surfer Rosa, considered their best album and I might put it on a list of worst albums ever recorded. The Smiths - more alternative, indie-pop crap. Never heard a song from them that I liked. Never heard a song from them that made me say "well, at least this one isn't so bad" Bruce Springsteen - One album aside, Born in the USA, which I think is really good, Bruce does nothing for me as well. 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's. Never thought much if him either. Synth-pop - pretty much this entire genre does very little for me. Some is ok, in small doses, but there's way too many artists in this genre to list. The same can be said of the majority of modern / college rock artists (for me). |

I do like a handful of their songs, LG - I just never saw what the critics did in their music overall.
Quiet Riot is another group whose popularity befuddles me. I'll second Poison, though. |

| Re: Most Overrated Bands of the 1980's! Their debut was just unique the first time I heard it, and it stuck with me. I only have five of their albums but I do still enjoy them.
We have some Poison fans who are bound to rally to the cause eventually... |

I love Dire Straits, their early albums, mind, not the MTV crap like Money For Nothing. I'm talking about songs like In The Gallery, Six Blade Knife, Skateaway, Southbound Again.
Yeah, Sting was just 80's radio filler to me.

Wow...I think Born in the USA is one of Bruce's weakest albums, and even it has a lot of really good songs on it (My Hometown, Bobbie Jean, No Surrender, I'm On Fire...hell, MOST of the songs are great). Then again, I also think he's better than Bob Dylan, so that makes me in the minority as far as classic rock icons go. I've even gone so far as to say that Born to Run is the perfect rock song.
I liked the Smiths a lot back when they were still together. I can hardly stand to listen to them now.
Same with REM, except I'll never get tired of Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning and especially Fables of the Reconstruction.
I don't know what it is about Depeche Mode that I don't like. I hate it when people compare New Order to them. I don't see it. At all. Plus, New Order kicks their ass all the way around the block.
I have met many, many people who have said "I respect Prince as a musician but personally I don't like his music". I understand that. Still, it makes me laugh to remember how some rock critics compared his guitar skills to those of Jimi Hendrix. Sorry, I ain't buyin' it.
Poison, Motley Crue, Guns 'n' Roses...meh.
Billy Joel is the most over-rated performer of all time. Wait, didn't I say that about Prince? Okay, let me amend that. Prince is the SECOND most overrated performer of all time. Billy Joel is the bland anti-christ of rock music. So he may have had a couple of hits and maybe even a decent song or two...but Pressure and We Didn't Start the Fire cancelled all of that out.

| Re: Most Overrated Bands of the 1980's! Quite a litany Jackory...don't be shy tell us what you Really think...
About Springsteen, I agree with Lynch except I love Born To Run and then Born In The USA second...I just don't get all the accolades about his studio work, I will not deny he is amazing live though.
Prince...never liked him at all, talented or not.
Billy Joel, that was a little harsh, I like The Stranger, but I only have a compilation CD of his hit songs. |

I think Prince usually gets compared to Hendrix for the was he plays visually more so than his style (though they do have similar elements). Pretty much what I'm saying is that if someone where to watching Prince play live then you can see the comparison with Jimi being much more factual.
I have been slowly becoming a bigger fan of Prince's and I can say the his style just doesn't appeal with rock standards but he blends a number of genres and styles together very well, which is what I most respect him for.
Also I agree with LG. That's pretty harsh on Billy. |
