Oh and as for the Kinks, guess maybe it's the company I keep or something but I was under the impression most people have a great opinion of them. My stepson and his bandmates seem to really think the Kinks were pretty great. The kid asked to borrow my Kinks and Clash CDs and it made my maternal heart quite proud.
Well, as John Sebastian said from a rather legendary stage in upstate New York once upon a time...that kid's gonna be far out!

From the "Bosstown Sound" Orpheous and their one hit song "Can't Find The Time To Tell You" I think around 1968.

Speaking of whom, I'd say that the Lovin' Spoonful is largely forgotten.

I've been listening to the Spoonful a bit. I forgot what a wealth of good songs they had and how often they charted. I think they were doing a lot of things the Dead ended up doing. You know, nice galumphy old timey sounding stuff.

"You and Me and Rain on the Roof" has always been one of my favorites.
I'm gonna go put on a stripey t-shirt and listen to them right now!

Galumphy??? What's that????

Anyway, the Spoonful did some fine songs. "Darling Be Home Soon" is one that you never hear much anymore, but it's just beautiful. "Do You Believe In Magic" and "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" are lovely songs as well...and who can forget "Summer In The City"?

Good point about the Dead. Sebastian and Garcia both came out of the folk revival of the early 60s. They were both into the jug band music of the 20s, ie the Cannon Jug Stompers, the Memphis Jug Band and other galumphy things like that... I love that old timey stuff.

How about the instrumental Surfin groups of the earrly 60'?

Songs like "Walk don't run" by The Ventures
"Telstar" by The Tornado's
And the ever popular "Wipe out" By the Surfaris.

I am sure there are others but none come to mind.

The Ventures? What a fun group they were. I got the chance to see them in Las Angeles in 1980. What a good time.
