Katatonia are a well known Swedish metal band that I guess could come under numerous categories like doom metal, progressive, death metal even. My sister got me into this band, I picked up several of their albums recently such as Brave Murder Day, Night Is The New Day, Last Fair Deal Gone Down. I enjoy the albums with the harsher vocals most but I love the cleaner vocal records too. Definitely a band I would recommend to people who want to go a bit out there with extreme music.
Dance of December Souls (1993)
Brave Murder Day (1996)
Discouraged Ones (1998)
Tonight's Decision (1999)
Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001)
Viva Emptiness (2003)
The Great Cold Distance (2006)
Night Is the New Day (2009)
Dead End Kings (2012)
The Fall of Hearts (2016)

What do you prefer the more screaming vocals or the more mellow stuff?
Both are equally great to me!
I would love to listen to their entire discography to hear them change from a more death/doom sound in their early work to their more alternate metal sound in their later work!!
I picked up The Great Cold Distance, it has the most melodic moments of most albums but they do it so well. Absolutely brilliant mix of melody, brutal riffing. I really love this band and cannot wait for Dead End Kings which reminds me here is Dead Letters the new track.
