| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? You are correct LG..
From what I have been reading Pulse was shot in Standard Definition so an HD Version would not improve the video. Delicate Sound was shot on film.
Even though it is not a "concert" one that has not been mentioned is "The Wall" which would be excellent in both video and audio quality if released on BluRay. I do remember seeing it in 1982 at the theater in 70mm Dolby and even back then the sound was awesome. Saw it in Dallas, at the Northpark theater.

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? I still have the Delicate Sound on VHS, and it sounds great to me...almost like the warmth of a good analog recording. I have Pulse on DVD and it is epic as well, but like Lynch I have a fondness for Delicate that goes beyond just the performance.
And you are right GG, if it's not encoded in the New format when they record it, then there is only so much you can do to upgrade it later.(Unless the audio was done wide open with no limitations.) Still the fact I can dim the lights turn on the system and have Pink Floyd play a concert in my house is amazing, growing up I would never have imagined all the technological enhancements we take for granted now. |

I personally prefer DTS-HD although it's hard to tell the difference. If you have the chance sometime try watching a good movie on Blu-Ray using DTS-HD and you will see what I am talking about. |
Actually, you can't really tap into the full potential of DTS-HD or Dolby True HD unless both your Blu-ray Disc player and your receiver are up to spec and have both of these codecs.
I heard it on a 7.1 system at CES in January and it was pretty awesome.
As for Pink Floyd DVDs, Pompeii is my favorite legitimate disc.
I have bootleg DVDs from the Animals and The Wall tours that are pretty cool.

Hep has to move out of the dark ages and get himself a DVD rig and a surround system, even die hard audiophiles would and do appreciate the quality of the new technology. It complements a great stereo, not replaces it. |
Yeah my friend has surround sound for his audio player, it sounds really wicked. |

Agreed
Pompeii is the best quality and the best representaion of the Floyd in their prime. There are other bootleg recordings out there such as the 1970 KQED studio broadcast, but nothing comes close to Pompeii. And if you get the Director's Cut there is extra footage of Rog, David, Rick and Nick working in the studio on what would become Dark Side of The Moon. Also some pretty funny interviews with the band.
As for DSOT and PULSE, I wore out that VHS tape (DSOT) when I was 14! So I'm pretty bored of it now. Pulse is good for a greatest hits collection and the extra interviews and stuff, but even though I own it, it's not my first choice to pop in the DVD player. |

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? ok I was trying to post a picture but it didn't work. How do I post pics?
Anyway there is another Floyd related DVD to check out. It's called A Technicolor Dream. It chronicles the underground music scene in late 1960's London and the concert that would become The 14-Hour Technicolor Dream at which Pink Floyd played on April 29th, 1967.
It might not make much sense if you aren't a hard core Floyd nut like I am, but it has some good interviews with Roger Waters and others.
I reccommend it. |

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? I prefer post DSOTM myself, Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse are both excellent, even though Waters is no longer part of the band.
No surprise seeing I prefer the later albums of Pink Floyd to the early recordings by quite a margin. |

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? Oh man, it's gotta be Live at Pompeii. That's the only one with any bonafide fire of fury, except for that early London stuff. Pulse and Delicate Sounds are washed up. I haven't listened to them since Floyd was all new and O.O to me. I mean, they're pretty good but it's just like, shit, listen to the albums. The differences are highly negligible.

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? ^^I disagree AAG, Delicate and Pulse blow Pompeii out of the water, it's not even close. I even prefer the live version of the Wall to Pompeii, if you are a fan of Early Pink Floyd then I would suggest that video, if you are a fan of the later and greater Floyd either of the other two concerts are pearlers.
I will never understand the fans that heap praise on early Floyd, the albums that made them world famous and established their unique sound are from Meddle forward, at least that is my view. |

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? Their unique sound came from trying to reinvent themselves after Syd, and also it was the end of the psychedelic underground in London. They could no longer play the whimsical pop that put them on the scene. They had to change and evolve.
That is why the period that contains Atom Heart Mother, More and Obscured By Clouds is so important. They would never have made albums like DSOTM and WYWH had it not been for constant experimentation and touring.

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? I like Pink Floyd a lot Architect, but I am also tired of the "Piper..." is the greatest album they ever recorded mantra that the elitists always go on and on about. Of course the early years were important as you said, but when David Gilmour replaced Syd, that is what set the stage for the growth of the band more than anything else. The haunting evocative soundscapes they created from Meddle forward dwarf all of their early work.
I have had this argument for years and years with a friend who is contrary for it's own sake at times, that is why I can't help posting my feelings about this topic.
Pompeii is a good DVD, don't want people to get the idea I think it's rubbish or anything, but Delicate and Pulse are just much better, sonically, technically, performance wise, no matter how I approach that comparison they always come out way ahead on my scale. |

| Re: What's your favorite Pink Floyd concert DVD? I agree with you, Piper is not the greatest album they ever made. It just may be the greatest psychedelic album made, but it definitley is not representative of their signature sound. I really don't even like Saucerful that much, actually I hated it for a while until I really started to get into Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother and worked my way back through their catalog!
I'm just sayin' you gotta know where you came from to know where you're going!
