| Re: Mike Love, True Genius of the Beach Boys!!! I think Mike Love is a jackass beyond belief, but he did write some good lyrics...and I have to say, his lyrical contribution to "Good Vibrations" is better than the Tony Asher one that is on "SMiLE". Also, it should be noted that he was a hero to Brian and in some sense was a muse for him...at least until PET SOUNDS. I don't agree that the songs before that are childish...they are incredible expressions of the adolescent soul and more complex than first meets the eye. Get a guitar and play DON'T WORRY BABY and see what I mean. |

| Re: Mike Love, True Genius of the Beach Boys!!! When I saw the Beach Boys last year (Just him and Bruce Johnson remained) he was doing this big talk and kept mentioning 'my cousin Brian' and some deranged fan shouted 'What did you do to Brian?!!?' and he shut the fcuk up for about thirty seconds and looked a bit pissed off/upset. The adolescent soul is usually childish in itself. I've got a guitar and played 'Don't Worry Baby' and complex isn't a word I'd use to describe it or any pre 1965ish recordings. They were a gimmick band and Mike Love was at the centre of it. And what the hell was the whole hindu thing all about?! |

Ah, but it is. For instance, the way the verse modulates into the chorus, and the flawless melody that flows throughout the song. These were truly innovative touches in a pop song at the time and, to a degree, still are. |

That's your opinion, but I would suggest that there is a big difference between "childish" and "childlike"...and there is a certain magic in the latter. |

Yes. "Childish" implies immaturity, while "childlike" implies a certain innocence and wonder.
It's funny because some of the stuff on 1977's "The Beach Boys Love You" could probably be construed as "childish," but I love that album. (Although "I Wanna Pick You Up" is a very disturbing little tune.) |

They didn't click with me until the early eighties...and I was a casual Beach Boys fan. I had heard "California Girls" a thousand times...but one afternoon I REALLY listened to it and (oh man) I "got" the genius of Brian Wilson. Listen: I know alot of you out there don't get it. I don't get opera...but I know there's something to be got,...ya know? Regarding the music of Brian Wilson:Please believe me when I say: THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE GOT. DON'T GIVE UP. |

| Re: Mike Love, True Genius of the Beach Boys!!! Hang on, ok I think we've got mixed up (probably my fault) between songwriting and lyric writing, and between Brian and Mike. Brian is one of the most innovative writers of the twentieth century, but as for the lyrics, I don't see them as anything more than plain moronic to be honest. Sure, that doesn't matter really, it makes great pop music, but when discussing the matter of 'Is Mike Love an arse?' I think it should be called into consideration that the lyrics to most of the early sixties stuff is that of an arse.
Indeed the adolescent soul is a misunderstood, misunderstanding, tortured thing. BUT not for 'winners' like Mike Love, who have had it mostly easy. When someone is an outcast or an outsider (Morrisey and Kurt Cobain to name but two of the top of my head in five seconds) they generally write great lyrics. When someone is a stud and doing well and above all else, NORMAL, they tend to write incredibly boring lyrics that mean nothing. Most great bands have one: e.g. The Who had Roger Daltrey, very much a great performer but not really an 'artist'
There are Poets that become rock stars, and then there are Rock stars that become poets.

So, here it is, a thread to worship at the sensible shoes of Rock's most underrated genius, Mike Love!!! mike is not only cute and dreamy, his brain is so large it pokes out of the top of his head.
THAT'S why he always wears his little hat. |
Please do me a favor. I've never understood the greatness of the Beach Boys, and I've seen them compared to the Beatles. What should I listen to, to get it?
Pet sounds? Enlighten me. | |
