Way to many for me to narrow it down to one so here are the ones I think that are the best 80's metal bands.
Motorhead
Megadeth
Annihilator
Metallica
Slayer
Anthrax
Flotsam and Jetsam
Testament
Exodus
Sodom
Kreator
Destruction
Morbid Saint
Death
Vio-lence
Iron Maiden
Voivod
Sepultura
Dark Angel
Exhorder
If we are talkin' teased-out hair metal then it's Motley Crue. But if we are talkin' Real metal from the 80's then its Metallica.

One to the other cried, how sweet
If endlessly we might embrace
The perfect union, deep in space
If Heaven might this once relent
And give us leave to shine as one
Our two lights here forever
One light blent
And through that longing to be one
The parting summons sound is wrong
I'll see you back to travel on
And on and on, around the sun
It all depends on who I'm bingeing on at the moment...lol
It's a tossup between Iron Maiden and Metallica. Iron Maiden had more albums, and I think their sound was a little more appealing than the thrashy guitars of Metallica. But then I hear albums like And Justice For All (a masterpiece, although flawed) and Master Of Puppets. I mean, on any given day those two albums will kick Maiden's a**. And yet there are times that I think Powerslave and Piece Of Mind kick Metallica's a** up and down all over the place. Flip a coin I guess. Both are great.
I'm not necesarily voting for my favourites but more for the attributes the band did have like lyrical context, musical composition, influences from the past to the present, albums sold, etc.
1. Metallica
2. Iron Maiden
3. Slayer
4. Motely Crue
5. Motorhead
For me, I don't consider AC/DC heavy metal, rather hard rock.
