Tobias Sammet began to write ideas for a concept album with many guest musicians. When the tour was finished, he was recruiting well-known metal stars like Kai Hansen and ex-Helloween singer Michael Kiske.
The project was recorded with Sammet playing keyboards/orchestration, Henjo Richter/guitar, Markus Grosskopf/bass, and Alex Holzwarth/drums. In 2001 The Metal Operas were released.
The project was completed in September 2002 with the release of The Metal Opera Part II.
At the end of 2006, Sammet confirmed the rumours of a third Avantasia album, due for release in 2008. On March 24, 2007, the name was confirmed to be "The Scarecrow".
The album was released on January 25, 2008, and includes special guests Rudolf Schenker, Sascha Paeth, drummer Eric Singer, and singers Bob Catley, Jørn Lande, Michael Kiske, Alice Cooper, Roy Khan, Amanda Somerville and Oliver Hartmann.
Tobias Sammet announced that a new album will be released by the end of 2009. Some of the special guests have been announced: drummers Eric Singer, Alex Holzwarth, and Felix Bohnke, as well as vocalists Michael Kiske, Bob Catley, Jørn Lande, Tim "Ripper" Owens, Klaus Meine, and Russell Allen....
I take a night off and MP writes an epic thread...
I have Everything that Tobias has done, in his band EDGUY, and the Avantasia concept albums. He is similar to Arjen, writes the songs, and then inivites the who's who of the hard rock metal bands to join in the fun.
You'll hear Hansi and Kai on Metal Opera part I, their voices are unmistakable and two of my favorite musicians from Europe.

I'm a huge fan of what I've heard of Avantasia over the last couple of years, but I've yet to have a chance to give them a proper listening. Tobias has an amazing voice, and is a very gifted writer indeed.
Now I know that this song is by Edguy and not Avantasia, but I don't have the knowledge to start and Edguy thread, so I'm gonna post it here. This song gives me chills everytime, the solo especially, its just so amazing.

Hansi and Kai, and Sammet? That's like putting Buckethead, Vai, and Satriani all together. Instant success.

After his amazing Metal Operas I & II came, "Lost in Space", a two part story and while not as well known as his Metal Opera and Scarecrow compositions, it's still worth checking out. Here's the cover and a song from part one.
