| Workout Thread What do you guys and gals do to keep in shape?
I used to be heavily into weight lifting years back but have tapered off. I work more on cardiovascular now by running 7 miles a day. It's kind of tough up here in Upper Michigan because of the cold climate sometimes but the rewards outwiegh the bad.
I enjoy mountain biking during the summer months - we have miles of trails up here.
And golf - I like to walk- try carrying a 30lb bag for 18 holes! |

| Re: Workout Thread Unfortunately I'm just not the workout type. I used to be for a short while in college. I took moden dance, went to exercise regularly at a club and I loved swimming laps in a pool. Used to go hiking a lot too.
However, it's just not in my nature to be so physically active. Even as a child I was a sit in the library and read type of kid. Hated phys ed. Never liked running around on the playground. Pissed me off when my teachers told me I had to go and spend some recess time out on the playground and not in the library. Ended up sitting on the lanai reading. LOL Didn't get active until I took gymnastics in high school and joined a hiking club so I could go the neighbor islands during spring break.
Now days my work out consists of chasing grandchildren and carrying them around.

| Re: Workout Thread i used to have a daily regimen of crunches and push ups last year, but then the summer came and it was just WAY too hot. by that time i was up to 100 for the stomach and 50 for the arms every morning after work, but yeah when you're covered in sweat just from walking home from the bus stop at 8am you don't really feel like exercising. so i stopped. i've got a chin up bar in the corner of my room now though, i should install it later this afternoon and get back into a little something.
i've also never had a driver's license so i tend to walk a lot.

| Re: Workout Thread I do about an hour of cardio and a half hour of weight lifting a day. I've had to cut back on weight lifting since I had a shoulder injury.
It's my plan to run the Seattle Marathon next November, with a bunch of half marathons i'll be running throughout the year. I'm trying to lose about 25-30 lbs for the summer. It'll allow me to be alot more effective in the mountains when I climb. So we'll see.

| Re: Workout Thread I mostly do outdoor walks around my home area as the beach and park are a block away and I love the fresh air and oxygen, much better than those silly treadmills.
I am starting to play drums again after mostly a year off and that is a good workout though a couple of days at the gym every week with some weights is in the near plans. |

Spike when did you get in to yoga, that seems pretty cool, but i don't know much about it but the stuff i leardned about zen, like meditation etc, makes me think yoga would be a good thing to learn, and i know i need to strech more so is it hard to learn yoga? | |

Now that's something I need to get back into...the yoga, not the bike. LOL
Yoga is great because it's one thing I can actually do. Thanks for bringing it up.

I'm still a newbie, but it hasn't been that hard for me. I started taking a weekly beginners class at a studio down the street about 18 months ago. For a while I just took that weekly class and slowly gained confidence. Then last spring I bought a couple of yoga books and started practicing at home. I've been doing it daily since July. It's the only kind of physical activity (other than my bike) that I haven't had to force myself to do. It's great exercise, but for me the mental health benefits are just as important. The breathing exercises and meditation that goes along with the poses are great stress relievers. Finally, I've never liked the competitive feel of the gym. Here there are usually six to eight to a class, we're all beginners -- and I'm often the only guy!

Thanks so much for your nice reply Spike. It sounds great, I really like the tie in with meditation. That has been very important to me and it would be great to combine the physical and mental and spiritail health. I still like lifting but i too hate the macho bs at most gyms (what do you bench dude?). And the point you make about the male female ratio well that would sure make me wanna go to class more with those 8 to 1 odds even i might stand a chance :o
peace

| Re: Workout Thread I've recently changed my eating habits a great deal. As well, I used to lift a lot more weights but I figured since i'll be doing alot of rock climbing I would be best served to lose 20-25 lbs. So I am focusing on strictly cardio, usually an hour of intensive aerobic activity every day. I augment this by lifting weights 3-4 times a week.
I've lost 8 lbs so far and I am currently at 200 lbs. I haven't been below 200 lbs in about 6 years. I can only imagine how different it will feel to hit my target weight of 180 lbs.

| Re: Workout Thread Was reading my kid's blog and he wrote some really funny stuff about getting "man-tits" and not knowing what the heck he's going to do about losing weight and getting in shape. In any case the following brought this thread to mind: Mankind was never designed to just "exercise". Our muscular system was designed to support our lives and activities, and your health and figure are usually good indications of such. Except for Sean M. That ****er couldn't gain a pound if you stapled that **** to him. Bastard.
I think that's my problem with exercising. Oh that and I'm a lazy b*tch when it comes to any kind of physical activity.
I am, however, thinking of getting into Yoga again, thanks to Spike's post. I think I'm still flexible enough to not kill myself. If you don't hear from me for a while, you'll know I probably ended up in traction.
