Soccer is a great sport. In this fly-speck of a berg, they never offered it back then.
They have a Soccer program here now that my son was in last summer. He really enjoyed it. He likes baseball too.
I think I enjoy watching him play as much as he enjoys playing. I can't stand some of the parents though - some of them act younger then the kids at the games. It's supposed to be about sportsmanship- win or lose! Some of these parents take it too far- carrying on, screaming and complaining. There's no place for it.
I'll never be one of those parents who push my kids into sports and act like a**holes at sporting events. |
I agree with this. Plus I was one of those who wanted a Soccer league in my high school or at least school district (Pasco County, FL -- and this was as late as 1979 to 1981), but NO! Football was king, and if the money wasn't going into Football when other sports (as well as some acadamics were screwed or at best on their own -- my brother who is a year older than me was in band and played the flute and the french horn and my mom had to take control to raise funds {my mom is a wonderful bookkeeper and accountant -- from being in the F.B.I. during WWII and keeping track of the pay of agents during the war -- and skills that I'm afraid I didn't inherit from her} to send the Gulf Comprehensive High band -- that to the consternation and frustration of the football team and their supporters were top in the marching bands at the time -- to perform at the Apple Blossom festival in D.C.).
A matter of fact, I have a rather hillarous story (or maybe others will consider this sad) about trying to get a soccer league started at our school:
In 1979, when I was also going through some health issues (that I still haven't quite learned all about, but have a better handle on now, at the age of 41 years, than I did back then), I wanted to participate and start a soccer team at Gulf High. And there were others. One of them was a kid who was the son of Pasco County's superintendent of schools: Tommy Weightman (who would later aggravate me in the political arena as being a Republican who wouldn't allow many things to improve in the Pasco County schools, least of all being the inclusion of soccer, although eventually Pasco County was forced to start a soccer league in 1986). Anyway the younger Weightman (can't remember the son's name, right now) was also into soccer and when I asked to play -- in a game after school or it might have been a Saturday -- he was one of those who discouraged me at first and thought I couldn't play. Well I prove d him wrong by playing the goalie (I know if I had been given half a chance back then I would have become a world famous goalie, later in life -- perhaps winning an Olympic medal), a matter of fact the younger Weightman was soooo thrilled with my performance (because he let me play on his team at this after school event on out of the way sandlot) that he told me he was proud of me and thought I was "GREAT"

 because I actually had helped his team WIN! Well, then the younger Weightman asked me if I would be willing to help, start a soccer league of Pasco County, by being the first goalie at Gulf High's first soccer team. I said sure. Of course instead when Tommy Weightman, under pressure from Gulf's losing football team and their stupid supporters, found out that his son was interested in starting a soccer team -- well, let's just say there would be NO soccer team (and the younger Weightman eventually fell into a lot of trouble -- could be a clue there?) Of course coming from the background I did with a single mom (a widow when she was only 47) who kept me from falling into a lot of trouble, I myself perserved onward (although not without some hassle by football team members and their supporters).
What I'm saying by my story up above is, that I agree with Martha and you too, Nirvanadude, it seems to me like soccer and several other sports, as well as academics were the ugly stepchild of the football team. This was especially true in the south for the longest time.
By the way I was also in to basketball and baseball (in playing). And was always impressed with skiiers, figure skaters and gymnasts (and still are, the three Olympic sports I most like to watch).
