| re: Official Football Thread NFL & CFL The America One network (whatever that is) has the broadcast rights to CFL games in the States. Most football fans who tune in quite enjoy the Canadian game because there are only twenty seconds allowed between plays as opposed to the thirty seconds in the NFL. As a result, the game moves right along in Canada with close to 50% more plays per sixty minutes of "playing" time in Canada.
Stars from NFL Europe who have graduated to the CFL are few and far between. In fact, very few fading stars from the NFL manage to crack CFL lineups either. Quite simply, the wider and longer field puts a premium on quickness in the CFL and once a player loses a step in the NFL, he doesn't suddenly gain it back stepping north of the border.
But the mathematics of the equation means that the CFL has thousands of young fellows hoping for careers in pro football from which to choose. Less than 1% of college football players make it to the NFL. The CFL has all the players on the bubble from which to choose and the typical CFL team has Americans at the positions where out and out speed is critical, such as wide receiver, defensive back and halfback.
But half of the roster is reserved for Canadians. Typically the Canadians are found playing lineman, linebacker, fullback, tight end/slotback, kicker, i.e. the strength positions because strength can be "taught" in the weight room while speed cannot.

| re: Official Football Thread NFL & CFL I check out the CFL every once in a awhile.Mainly just to see if any former N.C.State players are in the league. One former Wolfpacker Willie Burden played for Calgary and set a single season rushing record back in 1975 with 1896 yards.
And NFL Europe finally shut down in 2007.It had started in 1991 as the World League of American Football. |

| re: Official Football Thread NFL & CFL Yes, Willie Burden was a super running back in his prime. The typical running back takes such a pounding though that he loses it pretty quickly. Here's Willie's career stats with the first number representing games played, the second total yards rushing and the third yards per carry:
1974 CAL 16 0541 5.8
1975 CAL 16 1896 5.7
1976 CAL 13 0962 5.3
1977 CAL 16 1032 4.7
1978 CAL 15 0627 3.9
1979 CAL 13 0658 4.8
1980 CAL 16 0423 4.9
1981 CAL 08 0095 4.1 |

| re: Official Football Thread NFL & CFL Miami Dolphins fan here. Just checking in . Since pre-season ball will be here before we know it I'm gonna start getting geeked up a little early. I have no predictions as to how our season will go. Every year's "the year." The honeymoon's over for Sparano and Parcels.
I expect the Jets to do some serious damage in the league though. I've despised that team for years but I like seeing a group of renegades kick a few keesters and keep everyone honest. I'm actually gonna root for the Jets from a distance . |

| re: Official Football Thread NFL & CFL New England for me,,,but I think their days of dominating are over now...still they had a great run for a long time in this new era, and repaid my loyalty more than I could ever have hoped for.
Don't watch as much as I used to though, the burning passion for almost all sports is tainted by the continual greed of all of them, and the off field behavior of many players disgusts me. See the Cincinnati Bengals "Police Blotter" since Marvin Lewis took over,,,pathetic in a word. |

You should have watched the rest of the game. The Saskatchewan Roughriders made up a 33-12 third quarter deficit against the Alouettes and tied the game 40-40 on a last minute touchdown catch by Andy Fantuz.
The game then went into overtime which in the CFL now consists of alternating possessions from the 35 yard line until one team outscores the other. The Roughriders went first and Fantuz caught another touchdown pass. They then very surprisingly went for a two point convert and were succesful as Chris Getzlaf caught a pass in the endzone. But Montreal struck back with a touchdown of their own after a failed third down gamble seemed to have given Saskatchewan the win. But Saskatchewan was called for too many men on the field and the Alouettes made good on their second chance. Montreal receiver S.J. Green then made a spectacular diving reception in which he stretched out to grasp a ball that was sailing over the end line. His feet came down in bounds - but video replays clearly showed that his hands holding the ball came down on the white out of bounds line before his feet landed. But the officials blew the call and gave Montreal the two points to tie the game.
On the second overtime possession Montreal was limited to just a field goal. Saskatchewan though succeeded in marching in for a major as Weston Dressler caught a touchdown pass. Final score Saskatchewan 54 Montreal 51.
With the win the Roughriders got a small measure of revenge for last year's Grey Cup Game which they appeared to have won after Alouette kicker Damon Duval missed a 43 yard field goal on the last play of the game. But the Roughriders were called for too many men on the field when their kick returner inexplicably ran out onto the field at the last second despite the coaching staff's very proper decision to put all twelve men on the line to block the kick since they were leading by two and a single point would have made no difference! Duval was of course not going to miss another chance from the 33 and he didn't. Final score Montreal 28 Saskatchewan 27. Stunned silence descended upon Saskatchewan. What a horrible way to lose the big game!
Here we see both teams from a game early last year when they were wearing their retro uniforms:
