| Re: Why Would Anyone Want To Be A Conservative? As Annie indicated, this is not about your political leanings per se, but just the way your head thinks. Are you naturally very open minded for serious and even controversial changes in laws and the way we do things or does religion or some other factor keep you from having that kind of thinking? |

Um... not sure what sort of pot you are trying to stir here, but in the post above, you make it seem like people should have an open mind about politics, yet your first post that opened the thread is VERY close minded. |

An open mind in general - not just about politics. My first post was just commenting on why anyone would want to be conservative. It doesn't make me closed minded to wonder why people are happy being so close minded. |

| Re: Why Would Anyone Want To Be A Conservative? The simple fact of asking the question "why would anyone want to be a conservative" in itself is close minded and one-sided. there are good ideals and principles on both the conservative and liberal sides of the political fence. Same with the extreme on both sides are bad, both in theory and in practice. Completely shutting down and/or ripping only one side.. is not open minded. |

Why would anyone want to be a Democrat? Why would anyone want to be a dentist, or a crime scene clean-up person? Strip away the labels and we are all mere vessels consisting of flesh and bone propelled up top by a 3 pound gelatinous mass of gray matter fueled by electrical impulses, rattling around in a hard shell. I agree with Runtfan about the black and white situation. "Label" wise, I've known Democrats who are fiercely religious, and Conservatives who are also liberal in many ways.
By the wording in your post, it appears to zero in on religion in general and how it should change with the times. Is there a specific aspect of religion you would like to change? I may not be the sharpest pin in the cushion but it seems that things have changed quite a bit over the years, especially in the latter part of the 20th century, not confined to religion but many other aspects of modern life as well. Some changes have been spectacular, some have been complete turds. Of course there still exists those pesky matters of never ending greed, impotent politicians drunk with power, untruths used for personal political gain at the expense of hard working, law abiding benevolent citizens of their respective countries, and just plain old stupidity.
Welcome to CRF HeyMan. Any thoughts on the early years of Led Zeppelin or the opening guitar riff to Rush's Bastille Day? |

So, close minded...probably went over their head.
Then again, some people are so open minded, their brain falls out.
I've seen it all...and I don't want to see no more. |

It's not closed minded to ask a question. If you want to be conservative and you are more closed minded in your way of thinking - have at it. I have no problem with conservatives ultimately and I am not ripping on you.
Allow me to reiterate that this is NOT JUST ABOUT POLITICS, but the way people naturally think. |

Well, yeah, I'm being a little cynical. I was making the same point about how many of our lives really ARE carefree and innocent because we don't know much and are dealing with a much narrower perspective...but then we grow up and have to face the world as it is and see a much bigger picture...one is, by it's very nature, an illusion and one is not. The adult world is the real one and our childhoods are illusory, no matter how good or bad they are, because we only see what effects our immediate physical and mental space. And basing a world view and political view on a carefree ( and mostly ignorant) time in the past is folly.
I guess I'm a pragmatist more than anything. |

Here is a test you can take that analyzes your answers and will tell you where you sit politically.... The Political Compass

America is behind most free countries in many aspects (in fact America isn't even the freest country in the world, which blows my mind) - there haven't been that many changes. Unfortunately religion has a lot to do with this. |

Or you could just answer these 4 questions:
1. Should drugs be legal and taxed
2. Should prostitution be legal and taxed.
3. How do you feel about gay marriage.
4. Do you feel laws should be made and government be run with absolutely no connection to religious beliefs. |

Fact?
You wanna go to another country that's more free than the United States?
I'll personally buy you a one way ticket out of here. |
