| June: LGBT Pride Month
With the month of June we welcome LGBT ( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Pride Month or the shortened Gay Pride Month or simply Pride Month.
In 2000 then president Bill Clinton declared June the official Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in the United State however on this day of last year president Barack Obama changed that to include both Bisexual and Transgender individuals. "Gay Pride"?
Gay Pride is officially define by three premises: that people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity, that diversity is a gift, and that sexual orientation and gender identity are inherent and cannot be intentionally altered. Why June?
In commemoration of the Stonewall riots in 1969 which has become synonymous with the beginning of the gay rights liberation in not only the United States but the rest of the world as well.
Over the course of the month many events take place to honor and remember those lost from hate crimes as well as HIV and AIDS. Of these events the Pride Parades are the most well known but other, more casual ones such as parties and picnics also take place.
As the (self professed) LGBT Ambassador of The Classic Rock Forum I'll be adding to this thread periodically throughout the month with important figures, events, and anything else that's significant to LGBT Pride. |

| Re: June: LGBT Pride Month 1. Didn't you already have a day of silence or something for gays already? Why is a whole month necessary now?
2. Why are these however defined periods of time necessary anyway? Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, gays are discriminated against all the time - but so what? Each and every moment of our lives we're all discriminated against (or for), and we all discriminate against (or for). It's called freedom of association, which is part of the broader right to choice. Would you have the nanny state making even more choices for you? Big Brother is already regulating more of my life than I can stomach. How much more regulation do you want?
3. Why is this not in the serious discussion forum?

I think it's important that there's something like this. It's not meant to be any more controversial or worthy of "serious discussion" than Black History Month is. |

| Re: June: LGBT Pride Month Life is difficult for everyone ...
Plus we all have factors which make it more difficult, race, religion, gender, weight, etc ....
I have no problem with a Pride Month thread .. If anyone is NOT interested .. Don't read it.
If anyone thinks that there should not be such a month, start a poll in the serious discussion thread.
Play nice ... |

To Cosmic for this thread.
I think everyone has a right to have pride in who they are and what they stand for or believe in. This is about acceptance and love for "people", no mater what your gender or sexual preference. |

3. Why is this not in the serious discussion forum? |
1. Yes I did and there are differences between them. First of all, a day is roughly 1/30th as long as a month. Secondly, the Day of Silence is something that very large but not officially recognized any government office (and being that it is optional there is no need for it to be). Thirdly, LGBT Pride Month is not a somber, youth run event the Day of Silence is. It is first and foremost a month of celebration towards sexual preference and gender identification diversity as well as remembering those lost, spreading awareness, and just about anything else it can do.
Would care to poke at Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, National Disability Awareness Month, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, and another other month long event while your at it?
2. Continuing with what I said in #1: Yes we all do get discriminated against but tell me, what do "average" people get discriminated against for? How they dress, the job they have, the car they drive, whether they went to college or not? Whatever. Discrimination is never a good thing but sexual preference, gender identity, being disabled, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Icelandic, and whatever else are not like other forms of discrimination as it's something that is completely beyond one's control.
LGBT Pride Month and any other month of pride is about just that, PRIDE (also awareness). Each and every month of pride and awareness leads to exposure which leads to awareness which leads to tolerance.
3. This is not in the "Serious Discussion" sub forum because there is no need for it to be. It's not a discussion or debate and unless somebody feels the need to make it "serious" (in regards to the "Serious Discussion" sub forum) then there is no need for it to be there.

Thanks, Magic.
I'm think highly enough of the people here that I believe everyone will be open minded or at least mature enough to not post in this thread just to make an intolerant point. Don't anyone go and disappoint me. |

As you see it. He probably said what others are thinking, too.
Personally speaking, I didn't think CRF was in need of an LGBT Ambassador and was fine without one. But that's just me.

Are you talking about people who put tape over their mouths? Because very few people actually do that. |

Yeah....that's not exactly the method of execution I'm most fond of. It doesn't spread awareness, it just makes people who don't know about the Day of Silence already think you're being weird. |
