Default Stevie Ray Vaughn

In Sept of 1983, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble pulled into the Hollywood Palace on Vine St, for what I believe was their LA debut.

The Palace was right out the front door & across the street from my guitar shop Visions Music, on the corner of Hwd & Vine.

Stevie Ray had just recently quit David Bowie’s band, after playing on the break-out hit “Let’s Dance”. Prior to that, Stevie was primarily a regional artist mostly known in Texas. His short gig with David Bowie is what propelled him into becoming an internationally recognized star attraction.

I had read about Stevie mostly in Rolling Stone; he was too much of a Blues artist to get much publicity in magazines like Circus & Creem & Hit Parader & Rock Scene, etc.

Almost every guitar slinger from the nearby Hollywood Guitar Institute was on hand to observe up close the new guitar phenomenon, who really was completely counter to the typical Eddie Van Halen / Randy Rhoads 2-hand tappers that were graduating en masse from the Institute.

Stevie was one of those Old-School guys who wrapped his thumb all the way around the neck, like Hendrix & Clapton, as opposed to the new guys who were taught the so-called “proper way” with the wrist up high & the thumb directly under the fretboard.

Even back then, I was one of a very few still around who had actually seen Hendrix perform live, in Feb of ’68…& I was immediately struck by how much Stevie Ray copied & emulated Jimi…from the flamboyant way he dressed, to his tone, to the actual material he was playing.

It seemed like a very substantial portion of the set was devoted to Hendrix songs like Voodoo Chile, which Stevie was pretty faithful to. I remember thinking that @ that time, he was a little short on original material, & was veering towards being almost a Tribute act.

Of course, as his career progressed, Stevie proved that he was a very talented writer as well as gun slinger extraordinaire.

Did anybody else ever see Stevie before he died?

I saw him twice. The first time in Miami on the Soul to Soul tour with The Fabulous Thunderbirds opening. I got right up against the stage and got his low E string that he broke (sadly misplaced years ago). I hung out after the show and met Jimmy Vaughan in the lobby of the Knight Center (which is a theater and hotel). My friend and I then had to wait for a ride (our driver got us in an accident on the way to the show) so we decided to wander around the hotel. We went up to the 18th floor, the doors opened and Tommy Shannon was standing there smoking a cigarette. We were speechless. The doors closed and we were kicking ourselves for not saying anything.

I saw him again about a year later with the Outlaws as an opening act. Both shows were very good. I feel fortunate to have seen him. I remember I was shining my boots in my Air Force dorm in Germany getting ready for work when one of my sergeants broke the news to me that he was killed. One of those moments where you remember where you were at the time.

Great story pooldude. I was just listening to an impromptu jam session of SRV's when he was a guest on Howard Sterns radio show. The guy can smoke, playing little ditties while they were talking. I never saw him live but I saw a few recorded concerts of his and he sounds unbelieveable. I could only imagine actually being there.

His brother Jimmie isn't too bad either. Remember the Fabulous Thunderbirds?

I was lucky enough to have seen Stevie Ray when he opened for Robert Plant back in 1988 at Madison Square Garden in NYC.
He was just becoming a household name,I knew of him through the Bowie conection and then just getting into his style from being a passing phase to becoming the real deal.
Why is it talent like this always leaves us too soon ???

Thank God for dvds and cds.
peace

It's amazing how SRV's life is synonomous with the crossroads legend.

It's almost as if Bowie was Satan who struck a deal with him to become famous. He battled some addiction problems got sober and exorsised his demonns only to be taken at the pinnacle of his popularity.

I believe Stevie Ray Vaughan was a fantastic guitar player and it was a shame he passed away befor he could make more albums. Sadly I missed him playing live and kick myself for not going to see him. I love the track, "Mary had a little lamb"
